The self-assembly of a carbonylpyridine-based heptadentate ligand with Ln(III) results in the formation of triangular trinuclear europium complexes, which exhibit interesting luminescent properties in the solid state and in solution. With a view to developing multimodal responsive systems, we report here the preparation and characterisation of analogous complexes with Gd(III). The X-ray crystal structure of Gd(3)L2(3) indeed reveals the isostructurality with the Eu(III) complexes. A combination of (1)H NMRD and variable temperature studies yields the parameters elucidating the exchange of coordinated water and relaxivity properties. Conveniently, the competitive spectrophotometric titrations with EDTA and NTA are used to determine the thermodynamic stability constants of the europium complexes in aqueous media. In addition, the exchange reaction with EDTA is monitored with NMR and fluorimetry. The interactions of the Eu(III) trinuclear complex with some potentially interfering ligands are qualitatively investigated by means of luminescence titrations.

Scintillators that convert ionizing radiation into low-energy photons are essential for medical diagnostics and industrial inspections. Despite advances in X-ray scintillators, challenges remain in achieving high efficiency, environmental compatibility, stability, and flexibility. Here, we present experimental investigations of a new type of europium(III)-based hybrid ternary complex scintillators for improved X-ray detection and imaging.

Here we present the first use of principal component analysis of the full spectrum of a single europium complex to differentiate between structurally-similar analytes. We demonstrate that it can be used to distinguish between the nucleoside phosphate guests AMP, ADP, and ATP.

Two artificial imidazole-derived nucleobases, HQIm (3H-imidazo[4,5-f]quinolin-5-ol) and CaIm (imidazole-4-carboxylate), were introduced into short DNA duplexes to systematically investigate their thermal stability upon metal ion coordination. Metal-mediated base pairs are formed with the 3d metal ions CoII, NiII and ZnII, as well as with the lanthanoid ions EuIII and SmIII, which induce a thermal stabilization of up to 8 °C upon binding. The latter are the first lanthanoid-mediated base pairs involving only four donor atoms that result in a significant duplex stabilization.

Bilirubin is an important biomarker indicative of human health metabolism, especially in jaundice disease. In this work, we develop an Eu (Europium)-tungstate complex-based turn-off luminescence detection method for bilirubin in human (urineand serum)samples. The Eu-tungstate complex was synthesized by a straightforward one-pot procedure at ambient temperature, utilizing Europium chloride and Sodium tungstate as the precursors.

Purpose: With the growing interest in exploring radiolanthanides for nuclear medicine applications, the question arises as to whether they are generally interchangeable without affecting a biomolecule's pharmacokinetic properties. The goal of this study was to investigate similarities and differences of four (radio)lanthanides simultaneously applied as complexes of biomolecules or in ionic form.
Methods: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed for the simultaneous detection of four lanthanides (Ln = lutetium, terbium, gadolinium and europium) in biological samples.
