Article Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to examine potential barriers to seeking services for communication impairments perceived by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Specifically, this clinical survey investigated (a) the rate and importance of disclosure of membership in the LGBT community by people with communication impairments to their clinicians and (b) the perception of bias of audiologists and speech-language pathologists against LGBT individuals with communication impairments.
Method: A total of 192 people identifying as LGBT with a communication impairment responded to a web-based survey. The survey contained questions about the respondents' demographic information, living situation, and experiences with clinical services for communication impairments. In addition, the survey contained open-ended comment sections.
Results: There were differences in the responses of LGBT people with speech-language impairments and those with hearing impairments. The majority of respondents did not disclose their membership in the LGBT community, although they felt it was important. Most respondents reported perceiving bias toward a heterosexual orientation from their clinicians.
Conclusions: Exploration of issues important to the LGBT community contributes to the growing emphasis on diversity and cultural competency in communication sciences and disorders. Specific clinical recommendations and directions for future research are discussed.

Background And Objectives: In preparation for future clinical trials involving individuals with Alzheimer disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia, it is important to ascertain the widespread impact of symptoms from the direct perspectives of patients and caregivers. In this study, we performed cross-sectional surveys using large-scale patient and caregiver data to identify the prevalence and average impact of symptoms and symptomatic themes experienced by adults with AD, MCI, and dementia. Subsequent analyses were used to determine which demographic and disease-specific factors are associated with more severe disease.

One of the major age-related declines in female reproductive function is the reduced quantity and quality of oocytes. Here we demonstrate that structural changes in the zona pellucida (ZP) were associated with decreased fertilization rates from 34- to 38-week-old female mice, equivalent to the mid-reproductive of human females. In middle-aged mouse ovaries, the decline in the number of transzonal projections was accompanied by a decrease in cumulus cell-oocyte interactions, resulting in a deterioration of the oocyte quality.

Immune dysfunction in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been widely reported and is associated with increased impairments in social interactions, communication, repetitive behaviors, anxiety and gastrointestinal problems. Several lines of evidence point towards increased activation of the innate immune system including activation of microglia, increases in innate inflammatory cytokines/chemokines in blood, brain tissue and CSF, activated dendritic cells and macrophages, and abnormal peripheral monocyte cell function. Monocytes are major players in innate immunity and have important functions in the phagocytosis of pathogens or debris, immune defense and cytokine/chemokine production.
