Background: Some polymeric forms of immunoglobulin free light chains (FLCs) have been identified, such as dimer, trimer and tetramer, and the quantitative nephelometric assay of kappa and lambda light chains is very important to the diagnosis and management of multiple myeloma (MM), primary systemic amyloidosis (AL), etc. But, whether polymeric molecules could affect the results of the nephelometric assay, is rarely reported.

Methods: 12 urinary samples from patients with light-chain MM were separated by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and every sample was run with reduced and nonreduced sample buffer in one gel. Urinary kappa and lambda light chains were measured on the BNII nephelometer. We then added 3 microL beta-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) to the samples to transform the dimers into monomeric forms and measured them again.

Results: 10 samples showed obvious dimers by SDS-PAGE, of which 2 samples were kappa light chain dimers. Six samples had decreased quantitative results contrasted with the former values. The two samples of kappa light chain dimers decreased more obviously.

Conclusions: The light chain dimer combined with more antibodies than the monomer and a larger antigen-antibody complex was formed. The larger complex could magnify the reaction between antigen and antibody of the nephelometric assay and therefore false elevated results could measured.

Background: Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a cytoskeletal protein that supports neuronal structure. Blood NfL levels are reported to be higher in diseases where myelin is damaged. Studies investigating intracortical myelin (ICM) in bipolar disorder (BD) have reported deficits in ICM maturation over age.

The development of biomass material is an important approach to alleviating the excessive using of plastic packaging, by which the product could be more environmentally friendly and lower toxicity. In this study, we developed a biodegradable photodynamic antibacterial food packaging film using nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) synthesized from crayfish shells, combined with konjac glucomannan (KGM) and sodium alginate (SA). Casting method was used to prepare the composite film and results indicated that incorporation of N-CQDs significantly enhanced the mechanical and barrier properties of the film by reducing the number of micropores.

Objective To investigate the effects and molecular mechanism of Homer protein homolog 1a (Homer 1a) overexpression on nerve injury in mice with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods Sixty male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into five groups: sham group, TBI group, empty lentivirus (Lv-NC) group, Homer 1a overexpression lentivirus (Lv-Homer 1a) group and Lv-Homer 1a + 740 Y-P group, with 12 mice in each group. The lentivirus was orthotopic injected into the cerebral cortex of mice 5 d before modeling, while 740 Y-P was injected intraperitoneally 1 d before modeling.
