Although potentially powerful, molecular oxygen is an inert oxidant due to the triplet nature of its ground state. Therefore, many enzymesse various metal cations (M) to produce singlet active species M(n) O(2) . In this communication we investigate the topology of the Electron Localization Function (ELF) within five biomimetic complexes which are representative of the strategies followed by metalloenzymes to activate O(2) . Thanks to its coupling to the constrained DFT methods the ELF analysis reveals the tight connection between the spin state of the adduct and the spatial organization of the oxygen lone pairs. We suggest that enzymes could resort to spin state control to tune the regioselectivity of substrate oxidations.

Altermagnetism in two-dimensional CaRuO perovskite.

Nanoscale

January 2025

Departamento de Física, Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Avenida España 1680, Valparaíso, Chile.

We propose and characterize a novel two-dimensional material, 2D-CRO, derived from bulk calcium-based ruthenates (CROs) of the Ruddlesden-Popper family, CaRuO ( = 1 and 2). Using density functional theory, we demonstrate that 2D-CRO maintains structural stability down to the monolayer limit, exhibiting a tight interplay between structural and electronic properties. Notably, 2D-CRO displays altermagnetic behavior, characterized by zero net magnetization and strong spin-dependent phenomena, stabilized through dimensionality reduction.

Noncollinear Magnetic Configurations in Frustrated Magnets.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

School of Materials Science and Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing 100081, China.

The exploration of materials with nanoscale noncollinear configurations has been continuously attracting attention due to the prospective applications in high-performance magnetic devices. Compared to ferromagnetic materials, noncollinear structures in frustrated magnets hold greater research value due to their smaller sizes and unique properties. However, an effective description of the nanoscale noncollinear domain structures in frustrated magnets is lacking.

Establishing the relationship between catalytic performance and material structure is crucial for developing design principles for highly active catalysts. Herein, a type of perovskite fluoride, NHMnF, which owns strong-field coordination including fluorine and ammonia, is in situ grown on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and used as a model structure to study and improve the intrinsic catalytic activity through heteroatom doping strategies. This approach optimizes spin-dependent orbital interactions to alter the charge transfer between the catalyst and reactants.

Spin State Modulation with Oxygen Vacancy Orientates C/N Intermediates for Urea Electrosynthesis of Ultrahigh Efficiency.

The co-electrolysis of CO and NO to synthesize urea has become an effective pathway to alternate the conventional Bosch-Meiser process, while the complexity of C-/N-containing intermediates for C-N coupling results in the urea electrosynthesis of unsatisfactory efficiency. In this work, an electronic spin state modulation maneuver with oxygen vacancies (Ov) is unveiled to effectively meliorate the oriented generation of key intermediates NH and CO for C-N coupling, furnishing urea in ultrahigh yield of 2175.47 µg mg h and Faraday efficiency of 70.

The effect of physical cues on platelet storage lesion.

Hematology

December 2025

Department of Blood Transfusion, First Affiliated Hospital, Third Military Medical University (Army Medical University), Chongqing, People's Republic of China.

Background: Platelet concentrates play an important role in clinical treatment such as platelet function disorders and thrombocytopenia. In the process of preparation and storage of platelets, centrifugation, leukofiltration, and agitation will cause morphological changes and impaired function of platelets, which is associated with the increase of platelet transfusion refractoriness, and named as platelet storage lesion (PSL).

Method: This paper proposes three major operations (centrifugation, agitation, and leukofiltration) that platelets experience during the preparation and storage process, to explore the effect of physical cues on PSL.
