Four diterpenoid tanshinones and three phenolic acids were isolated from the crude ethanol extract of the cultured hairy roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge by bioassay-guided fractionation. By means of physicochemical and spectrometric analysis, they were identified as tanshinone ΙΙA (1), tanshinone Ι (2), cryptotanshinone (3), dihydrotanshinone Ι (4), rosmarinic acid (5), caffeic acid (6), and danshensu (7). These compounds were evaluated to show a broad antimicrobial spectrum of activity on test microorganisms including eight bacterial and one fungal species. Among the four tanshinones, cryptotanshinone (3) and dihydrotanshinone Ι (4) exhibited stronger antimicrobial activity than tanshinone ΙΙA (1) and tanshinone Ι (2). The results indicated that the major portion of the antimicrobial activity was due to the presence of tanshinones and phenolic acids in S. miltiorrhiza hairy roots, which could be used as the materials for producing antimicrobial agents for use in agricultural practice in the future.

A non-targeted analytical approach using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is proposed for the analysis of the free and bound volatile fractions of three emblematic indigenous Greek white winegrape varieties belonging to Vidiano, Malagousia, and Savvatiano and establish volatile varietal markers using multivariate chemometrics. A total of 89 free and 103 bound volatile compounds were identified, categorized into alcohols, aldehydes, esters, acids, terpenes, norisoprenoids, C6 compounds, phenols, and ketones. A robust Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) prediction model was developed and validated, and successfully classified the grape samples according to the variety with 100 % accuracy, demonstrating the potential of volatile profiling as a non-targeted fingerprinting approach for varietal discrimination.

This study used integrative omics to address the response of key elements of the grapevine holobiont to contrasted pedoclimatic conditions found in distinct subregions of Douro Valley (Portugal). A metabolic OPLS-DA model predicted with 100 % accuracy the geographic origin of berries; higher UV radiation, higher temperature and lower precipitation stimulated the accumulation of phenolic acids, flavonols and malvidin conjugates, in detriment of amino acids, organic acids, flavan-3-ols, proanthocyanidins and non-malvidin anthocyanins.
