Objective: To evaluate the influence of goitre on anatomic features and the correlation of these changes with difficulty in intubation.

Methods: A questionnaire was employed to assess 139 patients scheduled for elective surgery of euthyroid goitre to predict the potential of difficult intubation. These measurements were later correlated with the patients who eventually had difficult intubations. Neck circumference, mouth width, lip test, sternomental distance, thymomental distance, Mallampati score and laryngeal palpation were evaluated.

Results: All predictors were found to be significant as single predictors but on logistic regression analysis it was found that the circumference of the neck alone, was the independent predictor for difficult intubation.

Conclusion: Neck thickness in patients with goitre is a significant predictor of difficult intubation and should be used in preoperative assessment to anticipate difficult intubations.

Impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormone is associated with developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in euthyroid diabetic subjects.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Endocrine and Metabolic Disease Medical Center, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, The Affiliated Hospital to Nanjing University Medical School, Nanjing, China.

Background And Aims: Acquired resistance to thyroid hormone appears to exist in the general population. We aimed to evaluate the association between indices of thyroid hormone sensitivity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and made stratified analyses by diabetic status.

Methods: We included 26,413 participants from a health screening program and 8,246 hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes.

Background: Current guidelines recommend that hyperthyroid patients should be rendered euthyroid prior to surgical procedures. These guidelines rely heavily on the use of ATDs as the primary medication, and do not give recommendations for patients who have contraindications to ATDs, or for whom standalone ATD treatment is inadequate.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of adjunctive pharmacological therapy and/or therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) in the perioperative management of patients with thyrotoxicosis who were intolerant to ATD or for whom standalone ATD therapy was inadequate to achieve euthyroidism prior to surgery.

Background: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) affects up to 10 % of the population and is a common cause of hypothyroidism, which can lead to depression and anxiety. However, it remains unclear whether HT directly causes these conditions or if they arise due to HT-induced hypothyroidism. The present review aims to offer meta-analytic insights into the relationship between depression and anxiety in patients with euthyroid HT.

Background: There is currently limited work that evaluates the effect of co-morbid hypothyroidism on complications and outcomes following total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). This study aims to evaluate the impact of hypothyroidism on 90-day medical complications as well as 2-year implant related complications and revision rates following TSA.

Methods: This retrospective database analysis evaluated patients who underwent TSA between October 1, 2015, and March 9, 2022.

Autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTNs) represent ∼5% of all thyroid nodules and often necessitate definitive treatments such as surgery or radioiodine (I), both of which have inherent risks. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has emerged as an effective and safe therapeutic option for managing AFTNs. This study aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of RFA for solitary AFTNs in various countries across Latin America.
