Published: July 2011

Several ink dating methods based on solvents analysis using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were proposed in the last decades. These methods follow the drying of solvents from ballpoint pen inks on paper and seem very promising. However, several questions arose over the last few years among questioned documents examiners regarding the transparency and reproducibility of the proposed techniques. These questions should be carefully studied for accurate and ethical application of this methodology in casework. Inspired by a real investigation involving ink dating, the present paper discusses this particular issue throughout four main topics: aging processes, dating methods, validation procedures and data interpretation. This work presents a wide picture of the ink dating field, warns about potential shortcomings and also proposes some solutions to avoid reporting errors in court.

Non-Invasive Characterisation of Bromoil Prints by External Reflection FTIR Spectroscopy.

Molecules

December 2024

Research Group of Conservation of Cultural Heritage, Art and Conservation Department, Fine Arts Faculty, University of Barcelona, Pau Gargallo, 4, 08028 Barcelona, Spain.

The bromoil process, developed in 1907, was a photographic technique highly esteemed by pictorialist photographers for its capacity for image manipulation, which aligns its expressiveness with traditional pictorial techniques. Despite the artistic and technical value of bromoils and their prevalence in renowned collections, there is little research on their composition and structural characteristics. This study uses non-invasive external reflection FTIR spectroscopy to characterise 16 bromoil prints dating from the 1920s to 2010.

Article Synopsis
  • Paper differentiation is vital in forensic document examination, aiding in handwriting identification and ink analyses.
  • The study employed principal component analysis (PCA) and t-SNE on two datasets to discriminate paper manufacturers and determine the production date of documents.
  • Results showed that periodic marks left by paper-making machines can be effectively used for forensic analysis, with the combined PCA and t-SNE model achieving high performance in these tasks.

Objective: The present study describes a rare anatomical variation of the anterior jugular vein (AJV) and discusses its clinical relevance.

Methods: A head and neck specimen fixed in 10% formaldehyde from a 42-year-old female cadaver was submitted to angio technique with pre-vulcanized latex and water-soluble ink. During a routine dissection for the discipline of topographic anatomy, the presence of an arcuate AJV was detected in the anterior triangle of the neck.

Division of Forensic Sciences, Institute of Postgraduate Education, Istanbul Medeniyet University, 34700 Istanbul, Turkey; Department of Chemistry, Istanbul Medeniyet University, 34700 Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

This study represents a methodology to determine the falsified documents via a combined method of spectroscopic techniques and chemometrics. The techniques of UV-Vis and FTIR-ATR spectroscopies and principal component analysis methods have been applied to black, blue, and red ballpoint pens available in the Türkiye market. The analysis results of the applied spectroscopic techniques were found to be consistent with each other for the examined eleven ink samples from three different brands, and it was observed that FTIR-ATR spectroscopy had higher discriminative power.

Parchment is an ancient writing support formed from dehaired animal skins. Its manufacture comprises a series of liming and scraping steps before being stretched and dried under tension. Historical parchment represents a valuable source of cultural heritage which, until now, has limited investigations to noninvasive analyses to infer ink composition, degradation, or physical changes over time.
