Article Synopsis
  • * A study at Khalili Hospital analyzed 141 cases of these injuries, finding that knives, wood, and glass were common causes, with a significant number of injuries resulting in serious conditions like iris prolapse and traumatic cataracts.
  • * The research underscores the importance of preventive measures, parental supervision, and timely medical intervention to reduce the risk of severe outcomes, like retinal detachment, in young children who suffer from these injuries.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness and safety of a rigorous short-term supine position in preventing inadvertent retinal displacement after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with gas tamponade for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational analysis of a case series at two ophthalmological surgical centers. We included eyes diagnosed with macula-off RRD that maintained a strict face-up position for three hours immediately after PPV with intraoperative perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) and 20% sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tamponade.

Skilled reading involves processing the upcoming word in parafoveal vision before it is fixated, leading to shorter fixations on that word. This phenomenon, parafoveal preview benefit, is a key component of theoretical models of reading; it is measured using the invisible boundary paradigm, in which reading times on a target word are compared for instances when preview is accurate and when the target word is masked while in the parafovea. However, parafoveal masks have been shown to induce unintentional processing costs, thereby inflating measures of preview benefit.

Microperimetry Reliability Assessed From Fixation Performance.

Transl Vis Sci Technol

May 2023

Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford, NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, Oxford, UK.

Purpose: Microperimetry provides an accurate assessment of central retinal sensitivity due to its fundus-tracking capability, but it has limited reliability indicators. One method currently employed, fixation loss, samples the optic nerve blind spot for positive responses; however, it is unclear if these responses arise from unintentional button presses or from tracking failure leading to stimuli misplacement. We investigated the relationship between blind spot scotoma positive responses (termed scotoma responses) and fixation.

Unintentional macular injury following high-energy cosmetic laser calibration.

Lasers Surg Med

February 2023

Department of Ophthalmology, Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Concord, New South Wales, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • Unwanted hair removal has become a major concern for young people, especially women, with various techniques like intense pulse light therapy and laser treatments available.
  • A study comparing alexandrite, diode, and IPL found similar safety profiles across these methods, but all pose risks, including potential eye injuries from laser exposure.
  • Currently, there is a lack of clear regulations and licensing for using laser hair removal devices in Australia, with incidents of serious eye injuries, such as retinal burns and uveitis, noted in medical literature.
