Radiation can instigate apoptosis through multiple pathways of sphin-golipid metabolism, encompassing the activation of ceramide synthase, acid sphingomyelin-ase, neutral sphingomyelinase, sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase, and sphingosine-1-phosphate phosphatase, and the inhibition of sphingosine kinase-1.
