Compaction of calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA) by two single-head-double-tailed surfactants with variable tail lengths , Dihexadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB16) and Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB18), and one triple-head-double-tailed surfactant -dodecyl--(2-(dodecyldimethylammonio)ethyl)-,,,-tetramethylethane-1,2-diaminium (MQAS12) has been studied. DDAB18 is found to be the most efficient, while MQAS12 is the least efficient for cellular uptake. Hybrid materials of surfactants and silica nanoparticles have better compaction efficiency due to the cooperative binding.

Four double-tailed hybrid fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon (F-H) surfactants with a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) polar headgroup were synthesized. The hydrophobic scaffold consists of an amino acid core, onto which were grafted both fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon chains of different lengths. The PEG polar head was connected to the hydrophobic scaffold through a copper(I)-mediated click reaction.

This work investigated the removal efficiency of disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors by different drinking water treatment processes and evaluated the feasibility of using fluorescence components removal as an indicator. A four-component (including tryptophan-like, protein-bound, tyrosine-like, and humic-like components) parallel factor analysis model was developed basing on 288 fluorescence excitation-emission matrices. Among all treatment processes, coagulation-sedimentation process showed the best performance, with mean removal ratios of 30% in total fluorescence intensity and 31% in total formation potential (FP) of DBPs, respectively.

pH responsive surfactants, [CHN(CH)(CH)SCOCH]Br (CnSAc, n = 4, 11, 12), were prepared, and their properties in aqueous solution were examined. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) and critical vesicle concentration (cvc) were determined based on changes in conductivity, as well as by fluorescence measurements, and light scattering methods. A significant increase in the light scattering intensities of the CnSAc (n=11, 12) systems suggested that the growth of aggregates was accompanied by considerable counterion binding with increasing surfactant concentration.
