Pre-eclampsia (P-EC), a heterogenic multisystem disorder characterized by hypertension and proteinuria, usually develops in the second half of pregnancy. The incidence is 2 to 5%, and P-EC is therefore a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Although the exact etiology is unknown, placental factors released into the maternal circulation lead to systemic maternal inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Growing evidence indicates that placenta-derived microparticles, best known as syncytiotrophoblast microparticles (STBM), are important among these factors. This review provides an overview of the presence and function(s) of STBM and other cell-derived microparticles and exosomes.

Protein aggregation, a major concern in biopharmaceutical quality control, can be accelerated by various stresses during clinical handling. This study investigated potential aggregation risk factors during dilution process with syringe handling for intravenous administration. Using γ-globulin and IgG solutions as surrogate models of antibody therapeutics, we examined the effects of high sliding speeds and piston operations of the syringe on protein aggregation during saline dilution.

The human microbiota constitute a very complex ecosystem of microorganisms inhabiting both the inside and outside of our bodies, in which health maintenance and disease modification are the main regulatory features. The recent explosion of microbiome research has begun to detail its important role in neurological health, particularly concerning cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), a disorder associated with cognitive decline and vascular dementia. This narrative review represents state-of-the-art knowledge of the intimate, complex interplay between microbiota and brain health through the gut-brain axis (GBA) and the emerging role of glymphatic system dysfunction (glymphopathy) and circulating cell-derived microparticles (MPs) as mediators of these interactions.

An obstacle for many microfluidic developments is the fabrication of its structures, which is often complex, time-consuming, and expensive. Additive manufacturing can help to reduce these barriers. This study investigated whether the results of a microfluidic assay for the detection of the promyelocytic leukemia (PML)-retinoic acid receptor α (RARα) fusion protein (PML::RARA), and thus for the differential diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), could be transferred from borosilicate glass microfluidic structures to additively manufactured fluidics.

This study investigated the efficacy of an innovative edible coating, composed of fungal chitosan and alginate, functionalized with LC03, in both free and microencapsulated forms, to extend the shelf life and enhance the nutritional value of strawberries. LC03 cells were successfully encapsulated in alginate microparticles (MAL) and further coated with chitosan (MALC), resulting in enhanced protection (cell reduction below 1.4 CFU/mL), viability (8.

Many micro-particles including pathogens strongly adhere to hosts. It remains elusive how macrophages detach these surface-bound particles during phagocytosis. We show that, rather than binding directly to these particles, macrophages form unique β integrin-mediated adhesion structures at the cell-substrate interfaces, specifically encircling the surface-bound particles.
