Populations of marine red yeast from shrimps and the environments of shrimp culture were investigated from various areas at Zhanjiang in China. All strains were studied for the production of biomass and carotenoids. We isolated 88 marine red yeast strains and the average populations of marine red yeast in seawater and the water from shrimp culture ponds were 70.0 and 172.4 CFU per 100 ml water, respectively. For shrimp samples, average populations of marine red yeast from gills, intestines, and stomachs were 178.0, 15.0, and 8.0 CFU per shrimp, respectively. The isolates were grouped into nine species belonging to three genera as follows: Rhodosporidium, Rhodotorula, and Sporidiobolus. R. sphaerocarpum had the highest average biomass yield (10.3 ± 0.88 g/l), followed by S. ruineniae (10.1 g/l) and Rh. mucilaginosa (9.9 ± 1.75 g/l). R. paludigenum had the highest average carotenoid yield (2.83 ± 0.589 mg/l), followed by S. pararoseus (2.72 mg/l) and R. sphaerocarpum (2.59 ± 0.454 mg/l). The results showed that marine red yeasts were normal microbial components in the environments of shrimp culture and shrimps, and carotenoids are abundant in these marine red yeast.

Two Gram-stain-negative, curved-rod-shaped, non-motile and aerobic bacteria W6 and I13 were isolated from marine sediment samples collected from Meishan Island located in the East China Sea. Catalase and oxidase activities and hydrolysis of Tween 40, 60 and 80 were positive for both strains, while nitrate reduction, indole production, methyl red reaction and HS production were negative. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA and genome sequences revealed that strains W6 and I13 formed distinct phylogenetic lineages within the genera and , respectively.

Background: Spotted scat, a marine aquaculture fish, has variable body color development stages during their ontogenesis. However, the regulatory mechanism of body color patterns formation was poorly understood. Thyroid hormones (TH) function as an important endocrine factor in regulating metamorphosis.

Herein, we describe a new species of perchlet found at depths of 100-125 meters in mesophotic coral ecosystems of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. is unique in both morphology and coloration. The following combination of characters distinguishes it from all known congeners: dorsal fin X, 15; anal-fin rays III, 7; pectoral-fin rays 13 | 13 (13 | 12), all unbranched; principal caudal-fin rays 9 + 8; lateral line complete with 30-32 tubed scales; gill rakers 5 + 12; circumpeduncular scales 11-12; and absence of antrorse or retrorse spines on ventral margin of preopercle.

During our efforts to identify biologically active compounds from Red Sea marine invertebrates, a new compound, latrunculin U (), was identified from the Red Sea sponge along with latrunculins A (), B (), and 16--latrunculin B (). The structures of the latrunculins were elucidated based on a combination of comprehensive 1D and 2D NMR analyses and high-resolution mass spectral determinations. The antiproliferative potency of each compound in HeLa cells was evaluated, and they had IC values ranging from 0.

In this study, a novel "OFF-ON" fluorescent probe MPZ ((E)-5-((10-ethyl-2-methoxy-10H-phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene)thiazolidine-2,4-dione) based on phenothiazine is synthesized, which can rapidly (7 s) detect biogenic amines (BAs) through deprotonation, utilizing both colorimetric and fluorescent dual channels. An app for visual portable detection of fish freshness, named "Visual Evaluation", is independently developed. This app integrates several functions, including image capture, editable scanning of red, green, and blue (RGB) values, data analysis fitting, data storage, and verification.
