The congruent development of computational technology, bioinformatics and analytical instrumentation makes proteomics ready for the next leap. Present-day state of the art proteomics grew from a descriptive method towards a full stake holder in systems biology. High throughput and genome wide studies are now made at the functional level. These include quantitative aspects, functional aspects with respect to protein interactions as well as post translational modifications and advanced computational methods that aid in predicting protein function and mapping these functionalities across the species border. In this review an overview is given of the current status of these aspects in plant studies with special attention to non-genomic model plants.

Designer Organs: Ethical Genetic Modifications in the Era of Machine Perfusion.

Annu Rev Biomed Eng

January 2025

1Center for Engineering for Medicine and Surgery, Department of Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA;

Gene therapy is a rapidly developing field, finally yielding clinical benefits. Genetic engineering of organs for transplantation may soon be an option, thanks to convergence with another breakthrough technology, ex vivo machine perfusion (EVMP). EVMP allows access to the functioning organ for genetic manipulation prior to transplant.

Assessing Readability of Patient Education Materials on Adult-Acquired Buried Penis.

Ann Plast Surg

January 2025

From the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI.

Introduction: Adult-acquired buried penis (AABP) is an increasingly prevalent condition characterized by the penis "buried" in prepubic/suprapubic tissue. AABP affects urinary and sexual function, hygiene, and psychosocial well-being. Because many affected individuals are unfamiliar with the condition or hesitant to seek medical help, accessible, high-quality patient education materials (PEMs) are necessary.

Objective: Loss of function of the phospholipid scramblase (PLS) TMEM16F results in Scott Syndrome, a hereditary bleeding disorder generally attributed to intrinsic platelet dysfunction. The role of TMEM16F in endothelial cells, however, is not well understood. We sought to test the hypothesis that endothelial TMEM16F contributes to hemostasis by measuring bleeding time and venous clotting in endothelial-specific knockout (ECKO) mice.

Motivation: Machine learning-based scoring functions (MLBSFs) have been found to exhibit inconsistent performance on different benchmarks and be prone to learning dataset bias. For the field to develop MLBSFs that learn a generalisable understanding of physics, a more rigorous understanding of how they perform is required.

Results: In this work, we compared the performance of a diverse set of popular MLBSFs (RFScore, SIGN, OnionNet-2, Pafnucy, and PointVS) to our proposed baseline models that can only learn dataset biases on a range of benchmarks.

Thermoelectric (TE) devices recycle high-temperature waste-heat efficiently, but waste-heat below sub-250 °C remains uncaptured. As promoting full autonomy for the Internet of Things (IoT), we present a TE generator using multilayered pseudo--type GaN/TiN/GaN and -type TiO/TiN/TiO TE one-leg devices, where heterozygous of outer/inner layers demonstrates the functions of a colossal Seebeck coefficient ( = +15,000 μV K) with phonon-assist hopping, controlling by the porosity for reducing thermal conductivity (κ), a high electric conductivity (σ) with reducing κ by outer layers, and σ- coexistence over singular curve by the asymmetric electrode configuration. is elucidated hopping among inner grains and the space charge (SC) grain boundary (GB) of 100 μm regions within Debye length.
