Protein-calorie malnutrition is a widespread complication in hemodialysis (HD) patients and is associated with increased mortality. The pathogenesis of malnutrition is multifactorial. Intradialytic amino acid (AA) loss is considered one of the cofactors in the complex mechanisms that lead to malnutrition in HD patients. It has been documented that in each dialysis session there is a 6-8 gram loss of AA into the dialysate, which worsens with the use of high-flux membranes. The intradialytic AA loss is variably compensated by reduction of liver synthesis and increased AA release from muscle stores. In malnourished HD patients the serum AA concentration, especially branched-chain AA (BCAA), is correlated with nutritional status and anorexia, whereas BCAA supplementation improves the nutritional parameters and increases appetite. Further studies are necessary to clarify the role of alterations of AA metabolism in the pathogenesis of malnutrition and the potential beneficial effects of BCAA supplementation or alternative treatments in malnourished patients.

Group 13 aminoxy complexes of the form (L)E(TEMPO) (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl; L = THF (tetrahydrofuran) or Py (pyridine); E = Al, Ga, In) were prepared and structurally characterized. The complexes (THF)Ga(TEMPO) (1·THF) and (Py)In(TEMPO) (2·Py) are shown to heterolytically cleave H under mild conditions (3 atm, 20 °C, ≤ 1 h). 1·THF reacts reversibly with H to form a formal H-adduct that bears a Ga(iii) hydride site and a protonated TEMPO ligand with concomitant loss of THF, consistent with Ga(iii) and TEMPO functioning as Lewis acid and base, respectively.

Colitis is an inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. A widely consumed dietary nutrient, α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) is known to play a crucial role in cellular metabolism and provide protection to intestinal epithelium under various pathophysiological conditions. In this study, 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) was used to induce colitis in Wistar rats.

Significant changes in pre-dialytic partial pressure of CO (pCO) during a week-long cycle of hemodialysis (HD) can be an effect of the intermittent supplementation of bicarbonate to correct chronic acidosis in patients. Mathematical modeling efforts carried out using the same parameters before each HD session might fail to produce accurate predictions of pCO and plasma bicarbonate concentration (C) because of this variability. A numerical model describing acid-base equilibrium changes during HD was applied to predict pCO, pH, and C in 24 chronic HD patients, using both fixed parameters for the whole week and estimating a new value of minute ventilation (V) and net acid generation rate (G) for each interdialytic interval.

The delicate balance between bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts maintains bone homeostasis. Nuclear receptors (NRs) are now understood to be crucial in bone physiology and pathology. However, the function of the Farnesoid X receptor (FXR), a member of the NR family, in regulating bone homeostasis remains incompletely understood.

The tiller angle, one of the critical factors that determine the rice plant type, is closely related to rice yield. An appropriate rice tiller angle can improve rice photosynthetic efficiency and increase yields. In this study, we identified a transcription factor, TILLRE ANGLE CONTROL 8 (TAC8), that is highly expressed in the rice tiller base and positively regulates the tiller angle by regulating cell length and endogenous auxin content; TAC8 encodes a TEOSINTE BRANCHED1/CYCLOIDEA/PCF transcriptional activator that is highly expressed in the nucleus.
