Published: March 2011

L,L-Lactide, a dimer of L-lactic acid, is the typical monomer used for the catalytic synthesis of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA). We studied its phase diagram and reactivity at high pressure and high temperature by means of a diamond anvil cell. FTIR and Raman spectroscopy were employed to probe the changes occurring in the sample. An increase of temperature at pressure higher than 0.1 GPa revealed a solid-solid phase transition before the melting. A reaction was observed immediately after the melting with the almost complete transformation of the starting reactant to an amorphous poly(lactic acid) (PLA). The increase of pressure was found to accelerate the process, suggesting the reaction rate to be limited in the diffusion step. A steeper acceleration, likely due to multiphoton absorption processes of the 647.1 nm laser light by PLA, was observed in the Raman experiments.

Electronic address:

Shiitake mushroom is popularly consumed thanks to its umami taste and good flavor, but its stipe is often discarded due to the rough texture and poor chewiness. In the study, high-pressure homogenization (HPH) was applied to modify the physiochemical properties of shiitake mushroom nanocellulose (SMNC), and the SMNCs were used to constructing gel-like emulsions (EGs). Atomic force microscope and cryo-scanning electron microscope observations showed that SMNCs had shorter length after HPH treatment.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination of food crops pose severe public health risks, particularly in decentralized agricultural systems common in low-resource settings. Effective monitoring tools are critical for mitigating exposure, but their adoption is limited by barriers such as cost, infrastructure, and technical expertise. The objectives of this study were: (1) to evaluate common AFB1 detection methods, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and lateral-flow assays (LFA), validated via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), focusing on their suitability for possible applications in decentralized, low-resource settings; and (2) to conduct a barriers-to-use assessment for commonly available AFB1 detection methods and their applicability in low-resource settings.

Hydroxysilylene (HSi-OH) in the gas phase.

J Chem Phys

Ideal Vacuum Products, LLC, 5910 Midway Park Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87109, USA.

The hydroxysilylene (HSiOH) molecule has been spectroscopically identified in the gas phase for the first time. This highly reactive species was produced in a twin electric discharge jet using separate precursor streams of 16O2/18O2 and Si2H6/Si2D6, both diluted in high pressure argon. The strongest and most stable laser induced fluorescence (LIF) signals were obtained by applying an electric discharge to each of the precursor streams and then merging the discharge products just prior to expansion into vacuum.
