Published: April 2011

Chronic cavitary pulmonary aspergillosis (CCPA) has been associated with advanced lung diseases. Pulmonary sarcoidosis, a granulomatous inflammatory disorder, is associated with CCPA. We identified CCPA in 2% of cases in a large cohort of sarcoidosis patients. We found a lack of response to medical treatment and poor outcome in this subgroup.

Bioreactor contamination monitoring using off-gassed volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Metabolically active cells emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be used in real time to non-invasively monitor the health of cell cultures. We utilized these naturally occurring VOCs in an adapted culture method to detect differences in culturing Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells with and without Staphylococcus epidermidis and Aspergillus fumigatus contaminations. The VOC emissions from the cell cultures were extracted and measured from the culture flask headspace using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated Twisters, which were subjected to thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) analysis.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis is an incurable disease caused by the environmental mold Aspergillus fumigatus. This hypersensitivity pneumonia is characterized by an inflammatory type 2 immune response, accompanied by influx of eosinophils into the lung. To investigate the mode of action of eosinophils and the signaling events triggered by A.

Unlabelled: Myeloid phagocytes are essential for antifungal immunity against pulmonary and systemic infections. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying fungal clearance by phagocytes remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the role of Perforin-2 () in antifungal immunity.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) is a life-threatening complication in patients with severe COVID-19. Previously, acute respiratory distress syndrome in patients with COVID-19 has been associated with lung fungal dysbiosis, evidenced by reduced microbial diversity and colonization. Increased fungal burden in the lungs of critically ill COVID-19 patients is linked to prolonged mechanical ventilation and increased mortality.
