An enantioselective synthesis of the homoallenyl alcohols was achieved from the reaction of chiral 2-borylbutadiene with aldehydes through an allylic transfer reaction in good yields and enantioselectivities.

The chemistry of low-valent bismuth compounds has recently unlocked new concepts in catalysis and unique electronic structure fundamentals. In this work, we describe the synthesis and characterization of a highly reduced bismuth salt featuring a cationic core based on three contiguous Bi(I) centres. The triatomic bismuth-based core exhibits an electronic configuration that mimics the canonical description of the archetypical carbon-based π-allyl cation.

Using amines in catalytic transfer hydrogenation (TH) is challenging, despite their potential availability as a hydrogen source. Here, we describe a photoredox/nickel-catalyzed TH of alkyne through an intermediary aminoalkyl Ni species. This reaction successfully provided functionalized ()-alkenes, such as (homo)allyl ethers, alcohols, and amides (/ = up to >99:1), and the reaction thus bypasses a limitation of substrate scope in TH using amine and a Lindlar catalyst.

BcABA3 is an unusual sesquiterpene synthase that lacks the conserved DDxxD and DTE/NSE motifs. Despite this, it can catalyze the conversion of farnesyl diphosphate to 2Z,4E-α-ionylideneethane. We used structure prediction, multiscale simulations, and site-directed mutagenesis experiments to investigate BcABA3 and its catalytic mechanism.

Polyurethane (PUR) soft foams release malodorous and potentially toxic compounds when exposed to oxidative conditions. Current chamber test methods cannot distinguish between pre-existing volatiles and those formed during oxidation, nor can they assess the formation rates of oxidation products. We subjected PUR soft foam to oxidative treatment in a continuous air flow at 120 °C.

ConspectusSynthetic extracellular matrix (ECM) engineering is a highly interdisciplinary field integrating materials and polymer science and engineering, chemistry, cell biology, and medicine to develop innovative strategies to investigate and control cell-matrix interactions. Cellular microenvironments are complex and highly dynamic, changing in response to injury and disease. To capture some of these critical dynamics , biomaterial matrices have been developed with tailorable properties that can be modulated in the presence of cells.
