Aim: To investigate the changes of IL-8 and TNF-α in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) before and after treatment from chronic periodontitis.
Methods: 96 patients with chronic periodontitis were selected as study group and experienced initial periodontal therapy. 50 healthy people were selected as control group. Gingival crevicular fluid was collected before and after treatment. At the same time, the clinical parameters, including PLI, PD, SBI and AL were recorded, and the levels of IL-8 and TNF-α in GCF were measured by ELISA in two groups.
Results: The levels of IL-8 and TNF-α in GCF after treatment were significantly lowered in study group as compared with those before treatment (P < 0.05), while PLI, PD, SBI and AL showed significant reduction (P < 0.05). The levels of IL-8 and TNF-α in GCF before and after treatment were significantly highered in study group as compared with those in control group (P < 0.05). There was significant correlation between PD and IL-8 in GCF (r = 0.486, P < 0.05) and between SBI, PD and TNF-α in GCF (r = 0.495, 0.648, P < 0.05).
Conclusion: IL-8 and TNF-α may be associated with the development and the severity of periodontitis.
