Penetrating cardiac injuries are common in South Africa. Reports describing traumatic lesions to the heart caused by caudo-cranial migration of ingested foreign bodies are however extremely rare. Delayed presentation and intervention are associated with poor outcome in these patients; cardiac tamponade remains the most serious complication. We present the case of a 19 year-old man who sustained a left ventricular injury after intentionally swallowing eight sewing needles. The impacted needle was removed through a median sternotomy and the patient recovered uneventfully.

Timely and humane euthanasia is crucial for animal welfare on swine farms, yet challenges persist in its implementation, particularly in Brazil, where the responsibility often falls to caretakers lacking training. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of swine caretakers regarding euthanasia across non-integrated farms (ranging from 1,000 to 3,500 housed sows) and different experience levels (from less than a month to 40 years working with pigs). A total of 117 people directly working with pigs participated in a survey designed to evaluate their decision-making skills, euthanasia competencies, and understanding of Brazilian guidelines for euthanasia methods.

The exploitation and utilization of resources in marine environments have ignited a demand for advanced illumination and optical communication technologies. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs), heralded as "green lighting sources", offer a compelling solution to the technical challenges of marine exploration due to their inherent advantages. Among the myriad of LED technologies, phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) have emerged as frontrunners in marine applications.

Purpose: Despite significant improvements in the design and performance of continuous flow left ventricular assist devices (CFLVADs), one of the most important reasons hampering further penetration of this technology is the occurrence of adverse events, especially strokes. One of the well-known risk factors for strokes is hypertension which is particularly common in patients undergoing a CFLVAD implant. While the device is implanted in the heart, strokes happen due to pathology in the brain and we hypothesised that modelling the blood flow in the circle of Willis might shed light on the causation of strokes in this situation.

Gunshot-related myocardial injuries typically result from direct penetrating injury by the traversing bullet. We present a case of gunshot-related myocardial injury in the absence of direct penetrating injury to the cardiac structures and describe alternative mechanisms for ballistic-induced injury.

Objective: Current guidelines recommend the use of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (GpIIb/IIIa) inhibitors in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) only as a bail-out therapy. However, drug penetration to the jeopardised area may not be achieved due to impeded blood flow and increased microvascular resistance. Aim of our study is to investigate the impact of distal intracoronary GpIIb/IIIa inhibitor agent infusion in STEMI patients.
