A novel squaraine-based chemosensor SQ-1 has been synthesized, and its sensing behavior toward various metal ions was investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. In AcOH-H(2)O (40:60, v/v) solution, Hg(2+) ions coordinate with SQ-1 causing a deaggregation which induces a visual color and absorption spectral changes as well as strong fluorescence. In contrast, the addition of other metals (e.g., Pb(2+), Cd(2+), Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Al(3+), Ni(2+), Co(2+), Fe(3+), Ca(2+), K(+), Mg(2+), Na(+), and Ag(+)) does not induce these changes at all. Thus SQ-1 is a specific Hg(2+) sensing agent due to the inducing deaggregation of the dye molecule by Hg(2+).

A simple 1,2-squaraine based chemosensor material (SQ) has been reported to show dual sensing performance for colorimetric detection of Fe and Hg ions. Compared to common instrumental analysis, this method could provide fast and direct detection though colorimetric changes by the naked eye. The sensor has shown excellent selectivity over the other metal ions by tuning different solvent environments.

A new squaraine based chemosensor TSQ was developed for colorimetric detection of Fe ions. A thymine moiety in TSQ was constructed to act as an ion acceptor. The sensor displayed an instant colorimetric response specific to Fe over the other metal ions in 20% AcOH-HO solution.

A squaraine-based far-red/near-infrared fluorescent probe (SQ-DNBS) was exploited for thiophenol detection. SQ-DNBS is a colorimetric and "off-on" fluorometric dual-channel "naked-eye" chemosensor showing high selectivity, high sensitivity (detection limit: 9.9 nM), and rapid response to thiophenol in aqueous solution.

An unsymmetrical squaraine-based chemosensor SH2 has been synthesized, and its sensing behavior towards CO2 gas was described in detail by UV-vis and (1)H NMR spectroscopies in DMSO. The results indicated that the extremely sensitive "naked-eye" CO2 gas detection can be operated in the presence of excess [Bu4N]F (TBAF) and the sensor is easy to recycle. These properties enable SH2 to act as a CO2 and F(-) controlled "OFF-ON-OFF" switch.
