Case report of the successful treatment of pemphigus vulgaris using ovine forestomach matrix graft.

J Surg Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Medical Affairs, Aroa Biosurgery Limited, 64 Richard Pearse Drive, Auckland 2022, New Zealand.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a subtype of pemphigus and life-altering disorder that results in the formation of intraepithelial blisters in mucosa and skin. Though the etiology is not well understood, it is an autoimmune disorder resulting in acantholytic blisters due to auto-antibodies targeting proteins of keratinocyte adhesion. Rapid diagnosis and restoration of the epidermal layer is imperative for patients with PV as widespread epidermal damage can lead to high morbidity and mortality rates.

Draft genome dataset of strain R-35 isolated from tidal pool sediments.

Data Brief

February 2025

Applied Microbial and Health Biotechnology Institute, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, PO Box 1906, Bellville, Cape Town, 7530, South Africa.

The marine isolate, strain R-35, was isolated from marine sediments collected from the Glencairn Tidal Pool, Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town, South Africa. The genomic DNA was sequenced using the Ion Torrent GeneStudio™ S5 platform, and the assembly was performed using the SPAdes assembler on the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) Lengau Cluster located at the CSIR, Rosebank, South Africa. The draft genome assembly consisted of 722 contigs totaling 7,625,174 base pairs and a G+C% content of 72.

Aim: To explore the impact of age on the discriminative ability of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) 2 in prediction of unanticipated Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission, in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) and mortality within 24 hours of Rapid Response Team (RRT) review. Furthermore, to investigate 30- and 90-day mortality, and the discriminative ability of NEWS 2 in prediction of long-term mortality among RRT-reviewed patients.

Methods: Prospective, multi-centre study based on 830 complete cases.

Muscle Fiber-Inspired High-Performance Strain Sensors for Motion Recognition and Control.

Langmuir

January 2025

Henan Province Engineering Technology Research Center of MEMS Manufacturing and Applications, School of Mechanics and Safety Engineering, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou 450001, China.

The rapid development of wearable technology, flexible electronics, and human-machine interaction has brought about revolutionary changes to the fields of motion analysis and physiological monitoring. Sensors for detecting human motion and physiological signals have become a hot topic of current research. Inspired by the muscle fiber structure, this paper proposed a highly stable strain sensor that was composed of stretchable Spandex fibers (SPF), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and silicone rubber (Ecoflex).

Co-occurring substance use disorders are common in medical settings, yet limited literature exists on concomitant pharmacological management. We present a case where low-dose buprenorphine induction (LDBI) and rapid phenobarbital taper were performed concurrently in a hospital setting to manage co-occurring opioid dependence (on chronic methadone maintenance therapy) and benzodiazepine dependence (prescribed alprazolam). The simultaneous management was well-tolerated and completed with minimal complications, successfully enabling candidacy for the patient's preferred disposition.
