Diffusion based separations are essential for laboratory and clinical dialysis processes. New molecularly thin nanoporous membranes may improve the rate and quality of separations achievable by these processes. In this work we have performed protein and small molecule separations with 15 nm thick porous nanocrystalline silicon (pnc-Si) membranes and compared the results to 1- and 3- dimensional models of diffusion through ultrathin membranes. The models predict the amount of resistance contributed by the membrane by using pore characteristics obtained by direct inspection of pnc-Si membranes in transmission electron micrographs. The theoretical results indicate that molecularly thin membranes are expected to enable higher resolution separations at times before equilibrium compared to thicker membranes with the same pore diameters and porosities. We also explored the impact of experimental parameters such as porosity, pore distribution, diffusion time, and chamber size on the sieving characteristics. Experimental results are found to be in good agreement with the theory, and ultrathin membranes are shown to impart little overall resistance to the diffusion of molecules smaller than the physical pore size cutoff. The largest molecules tested experience more hindrance than expected from simulations indicating that factors not incorporated in the models, such as molecule shape, electrostatic repulsion, and adsorption to pore walls, are likely important.

Developing insertion-type anodes is essential for designing high-performance "rocking chair" zinc-ion batteries. BiOCl shows great potential as an insertion-type anode material for Zn storage due to its high specific capacity and unique layered structure. However, the development of BiOCl has been significantly hampered by its poor stability and kinetics during cycling.

Designing advanced materials that effectively mitigate the poor cycle life of battery-type electrodes with high specific capacities is crucial for next-generation energy storage systems. Herein, graphene oxide-ceria (GO-CeO) nanocomposite synthesized via a facile wet chemical route is explored as cathode for high-performance supercapacitors. The morphological analysis suggests fine ceria (CeO) nanoparticles dispersed over ultrathin graphene oxide (GO) sheets while structural studies reveal face-centered cubic phase of CeO in the nanocomposite.

Layered VO·6HO is a promising candidate for aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs) but with moderate electrochemical performances. Herein, the charge storage properties of VO·6HO are markedly improved by building up the heterointerface on its surface using amorphous molybdenum trioxide as the heteromaterial. The amorphous molybdenum trioxide functioning as the proton reservoir enables the proton-involved electrochemical reactions and induces the formation of a built-in electric field along the [001] orientation at the heterointerface constructed by the (001) plane of VO·6HO, which could provide new diffusion pathways and extra sites for ion storage.

Limited by the adsorption and diffusion rate of water molecules, traditional humidity sensors, such as those based on polymer electrolytes, porous ceramics, and metal oxides, typically have long response times, which hinder their application in monitoring transient humidity changes. Here we present an ultrafast humidity sensor with a millisecond-level response. The sensor is prepared by assembling monolayer graphene oxide quantum dots on silica microspheres using a simple electrostatic self-assembly technique.

Converting CO to high-value fine chemicals represents one of the most promising approaches to combat global warming and subsequently achieve a sustainable carbon cycle. Herein, we contribute an organoboron functionalized ultra-thin metal-organic nanosheet (MON), termed TCPB-Zr-NS, featuring an abundance of exposed Lewis acidic B and formate sites, which can effectively promote CO conversion upon the addition of Lewis basic o-phenylenediamines. Compared with the prototypical 3D analogue TCPB-Zr-3D, the resultant TCPB-Zr-NS showcases dramatically improved catalytic activity for the cyclization of o-phenylenediamine as a result of the highly exposed active sites and efficient substrates/products diffusion.
