In the present work we investigate the vaporization of zinc or its compounds during thermal treatment of ZnO with tetrabromobisphenol A. Samples of 2g of ZnO:TBBPA (3.34:1) were isothermally heated in a laboratory-scale furnace at temperatures from 490 °C to 950 °C, and the solid, condensed and gaseous products formed were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, electron probe microanalysis, inductively coupled plasma analysis, ion chromatography, and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The results obtained indicate that the vaporization of ZnBr(2) formed strongly depends on heating time and temperature, yet is restrained by char, if formed with sufficient yield (above 15 wt%). Starting from 850 °C, this char commences carbothermic reduction of any remaining ZnO, which from then begins to evaporate as zinc metal vapor. Volatilization of zinc is completed at 950 °C. The presence of 5 vol.% of oxygen has no significant effect on the vaporization of formed ZnBr(2), the carbothermic reduction or the volatilization of metallic zinc. Strongly oxidizing conditions (20 vol.% of oxygen), however, boost the oxidation of char and thus the vaporization of ZnBr(2), but prevent carbothermic reduction of any un-reacted ZnO by depleting this char.

Huge volume changes of bismuth (Bi) anode leading to rapid capacity hindered its practical application in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, porous Bi@C (P-Bi@C) microspheres consisting of self-assembled Bi nanosheets and carbon shells were constructed via a hydrothermal method combined with a carbothermic reduction. The optimized P-Bi@C-700 (annealed at 700 °C) demonstrates 359.

Deterministic fabrication of highly thermally conductive composite film with satisfying low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) absorption performance exhibits great potential in advancing the application of 5G smart electric devices but persists challenge. Herein, a multifunctional flexible film combined with hetero-structured FeWC-FeWO@C (FWC-O@C) as the absorber and aramid nanofibers (ANFs) as the matrix was prepared. Driven by an atomic gradient infusion reduction strategy, the carbon atoms of absorbers can be precisely relocated from carbon shell to core oxometallate lattice, triggering in situ carbothermic reduction for customization of unique oxometallate-carbide heterojunctions and surface geometrical structure.

Direct reduction of chromite (DRC) is a promising alternative process for ferrochrome production with the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional smelting. In DRC, chromium (Cr) and iron (Fe) from chromite ore incongruently dissolve into a molten salt, which facilitates mass transfer to a carbon (C) reductant where in situ metallization occurs. Consequently, ferrochrome is produced below the slag melting temperatures, achieving substantial energy savings relative to smelting.

Arsenic-bearing neutralization (ABN) sludge is a classical hazardous waste commonly found in nonferrous metallurgy. However, the current storage of these hazardous wastes not only has to pay costly hazardous waste taxes but also poses significant risks to both the environment and human health. To address these issues and achieve the comprehensive utilization and minimization of ABN sludge, this study proposes a new combined process.

From a chemical infrastructure perspective, it is important to ensure that all ions constituting a target product, , Zr and B ions for ZrB, are fully linked with a cross-linking structure for synthesis an organic precursor. In the present study, glycerol is used as a chelating ligand to prepare boron both partially and fully linked with the cross-linking structure of organic precursors by a sol-gel route. The results are far from expected, in that the more linked boron there is in the precursor, the purer the ZrB produced.
