Investigation, assessment, and management of carcinogenic risks are not only scientific but also political responsibilities. In Canada, this becomes cumbersome, since local, provincial and federal policies are involved. The process also involves workers and management. This article outlines Canadian legislative experience, the principles involved, the methods of risk assessment, and the classification of carcinogens in the workplace.

Strong inorganic acid mists and respiratory tract cancers: a meta-analysis.

Occup Med (Lond)

January 2025

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

Background: Exposure to strong inorganic acid mists (SIAMs) in the workplace has been linked to respiratory tract cancers.

Aims: We conducted a meta-analysis of cohort and case-control studies examining the association between occupational SIAMs and respiratory tract cancers other than laryngeal cancer, which is already established.

Methods: Studies mentioned in the 1992 IARC Monograph on carcinogenicity of SIAMs were combined with later studies identified from a systematic search of Scopus, PubMed and Embase.

A Health Risk Assessment of Workers Exposed to Organic Paint Solvents Used in the Korean Shipbuilding Industry.

Toxics

December 2024

Health and Safety Convergence Science Introduction, College of Health Science, Korea University, Seoul 02841, Republic of Korea.

In the shipbuilding industry, during the painting process, workers are exposed to various substances in paint, including organic solvents that can adversely affect their health. Most workplace exposures to organic solvents involve mixtures of organic compounds. Therefore, in this study, the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were derived using data from the Workplace Environmental Monitoring Program in Korea for six organic solvents (xylene, n-butanol, ethylbenzene, isobutyl alcohol, toluene, and methylisobutyl ketone [MIBK]) commonly used in the steel shipbuilding industry.

Article Synopsis
  • Groundwater in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, is significantly contaminated with fluoride levels averaging 2.30 mg/L, exceeding permissible limits set by BIS and WHO, posing serious health risks such as dental and skeletal fluorosis.
  • A Probabilistic Health Risk Assessment using Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) revealed a high risk of non-carcinogenic diseases, especially in children with a hazard quotient of 3.29 in certain areas.
  • The study underscores the urgent need for groundwater treatment, ongoing monitoring, and public education on fluoride risks to ensure safe drinking water, highlighting the effectiveness of the ANN model in assessing health uncertainties.
