The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of the HESI midcurricular examination in identifying at-risk students earlier in their nursing career. This study used quantitative measures to examine the relationship between the HESI midcurricular examination and the student's success in the nursing program and their performance on the HESI-E2 and the NCLEX-RN. In logistic regression models, the score attained on the HESI midcurricular examination was a significant predictor of academic and NCLEX-RN success, with significant differences in scores between those who were and were not successful. Statistically significant correlations were found between the HESI midcurricular examination score and the score on the HESI-E2 and their performance in the capstone nursing courses. An analysis of the data supported the belief that the HESI midcurricular examination was a useful predictive tool that can identify students at risk for nonsuccess prior to the senior year of nursing so that measures to ensure success can be implemented.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of the midcurricular HESI examination in identifying at-risk students early in their nursing program. The sample included baccalaureate nursing graduates from two university programs in the southeastern United States (n = 256). A quasi-experimental design was used to determine how well the midcurricular HESI predicted outcomes on the HESI E(2) and the NCLEX-RN passing status while controlling for demographic and institutional covariates.

Processes used by a university to reverse the downward spiral of NCLEX-RN pass rates are described. Reasons for poor pass rates were found to be multifaceted and included gaps in curriculum content, student attitudes toward taking the licensure exam, delays in taking the exam following graduation, inadequate student preparation for taking standardized exams, and inappropriate and ineffective exit examinations. Various strategies for reversing the trend of the NCLEX failure rate included: addressing areas of weakness in the curriculum; revising courses; engaging students; changing standardized exit exams; employing a midcurricular and other standardized exams; and implementing remedial courses for poor performance on standardized exams.
