Cortical and central white matter (WM) volumes were measured to assess short- and long-range connectivity in autism, respectively. Subjects included 23 boys with autism and 23 matched controls, all without intellectual disability. Magnetic resonance imaging data obtained at 1.5 T were analyzed using BRAINS2 software (University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA, USA). Central WM volume was quantified by subtracting cortical from supratentorial WM volumes. Reduced central WM volume was observed in the autism group. IQ was higher in controls with no observed correlations between WM volumes and IQ. This preliminary evidence of reduced central WM volume in autism suggests abnormal long-range connectivity.

Cleft lip and palate (CL/P) are prevalent congenital anomalies with complex genetic causes. The G874A mutation of T-box transcription factor 22 (TBX-22) gene is notably associated with CL/P, while the underlying mechanism remains to be clarified. Studies have shown that the restriction of epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) process in medial edge epithelial cells (MEEs) is crucial for CL/P development.

Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of the direct inferior endplate approach in percutaneous endoscopic interlaminar discectomy (PEID) for the treatment of L5-S1 disc herniation.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 116 patients with L5-S1 disc herniation treated with PEID; 74 patients underwent surgery via the direct inferior endplate approach (group A), and 42 patients underwent surgery via the indirect approach (group B). The number of intraoperative fluoroscopy exposures, establishment channel time, operation time, postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were compared between the 2 groups.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune condition that damages the myelin sheath of neurons in the central nervous system, resulting in compromised nerve transmission and motor impairment. The astrocytopathy is considered one of the prominent etiological factor in the pathophysiology of demyelination in MS. The expression level of ceramide synthase-2 (CS-2) is yet to be established in the pathophysiology of astrocytopathy although the derailed ceramide biosynthetic pathways is well demonstrated in the pathophysiology of demyelination.

Previous studies investigating the influence of hot spring bathing on sleep quality have predominantly focused on the short-term effects through questionnaire surveys without blood collection for biochemical tests. Here, we undertook a comprehensive investigation of the long-term health effects of hot spring bathing among the residents of Hot Spring Village. A total of 140 participants were enrolled, and their demographic characteristics and the patterns of hot spring bathing were obtained via face-to-face interview, and sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
