This article describes the emerging role of educational multiuser virtual environments, specifically Second Life™, in anatomical sciences education. Virtual worlds promote inquiry-based learning and conceptual understanding, potentially making them applicable for teaching and learning gross anatomy. A short introduction to Second Life as an anatomical educational tool is provided, along with description of existing anatomy applications and future directions for this innovative teaching modality.

Anti-arthritic potential of crude sulfated polysaccharide from marine macroalgae (Turner) C. Agardh: Regulation of cytokine cascade.

Biomol Concepts

January 2025

Division of Pharmacology, School of Medical and Life Sciences, Sunway University, No. 5, Jalan Universiti, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia.

Seaweeds have been utilized as food, fodder, fertilizer, and medicine since ancient times; nevertheless, they have received only a little attention. In the current work, we extracted the sulfated polysaccharide from a marine source and investigated its anti-arthritic potential . The isolated and freeze-dried polysaccharide was tested for acute oral toxicity based on OECD 423.

A Y-shaped sphenoidal sinus septum: a case report.

Anat Cell Biol

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, Tulane Center for Clinical Neurosciences, Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA, USA.

The sphenoidal sinus septum is one of the most important landmarks during endonasal endoscopic transsphe-noidal operations. During routine coronal sectioning of the face, we found a variant Y-shaped septum in the sphenoidal sinus of a female cadaver. This unusual septum was found between two sections (anterior and posterior sections) and located inferior to the pituitary gland.

Purpose: Conventional radiotherapy (CRT) has limited local control and poses a high risk of severe toxicity in large lung tumors. This study aimed to develop an integrated treatment plan that combines CRT with lattice boost radiotherapy (LRT) and monitors its dosimetric characteristics.

Methods: This study employed cone-beam computed tomography from 115 lung cancer patients to develop a U-Net +  + deep learning model for generating synthetic CT (sCT).

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyloid-β (Aβ) triggers the aggregation and spreading of tau pathology, which drives neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. However, the pathophysiological link between Aβ and tau remains unclear, which hinders therapeutic efforts to attenuate Aβ-related tau accumulation. Aβ has been found to trigger neuronal hyperactivity and hyperconnectivity, and preclinical research has shown that tau spreads across connected neurons in an activity-dependent manner.

Gross recurrent laryngeal nerve invasion by extranodal extension in thyroid carcinoma.

BMC Cancer

January 2025

Department of Ultrasound, Peking University Third Hospital, 49 North Garden Road, Haidian District, Beijing, 100191, China.

Background: Lymphatic metastasis commonly occurs in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma and medullary thyroid carcinoma. The clinical and imaging characteristics of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) invasion by extranodal extension (ENE) of metastatic lymph nodes remain understudied. This study aimed to evaluate these characteristics in patients with thyroid carcinoma.
