Hydrosilylation provides a route to form substituted silanes in solution. A similar reaction has been observed in the formation of covalent organic monolayers on a hydrogen-terminated silicon surface and is called thermal hydrosilylation. In solution, the mechanism requires a catalyst to add the basal silicon and saturating hydrogen to the C=C double bond. On the silicon surface, however, the reaction proceeds efficiently at 200 °C, initiated by visible light, and more slowly at room temperature in the dark. Such low activation energy barriers for the reactions on a surface relative to that required for solution hydrosilylation are remarkable, and although many explanations have been suggested, controversy still exists. In this work using a constrained molecular dynamics approach within the density functional theory framework, we show that the free energy activation barrier for abstraction of a hydrogen from silicon by an alkene molecule can be overcome by visible light or thermal excitation. Furthermore, we show that by concerted transfer of a hydrogen from the α-carbon to the β-carbon, a 1-alkene can insert its α-carbon into a surface Si-H bond to accomplish hydrosilylation.

We integrate monolayer TMDCs into silicon-on-insulation (SOI) waveguides and dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton (DLSPP) waveguides to enhance nonlinear parameters (γ) of silicon-based waveguides. By optimizing the waveguide geometry, we have achieved significantly improved γ. In MoSe-on-SOI and MoSe-in-DLSPP waveguide with optimized geometry, the maximum γ at the excitonic resonant peak (λ) is 5001.

This work aimed to extract silica from combination of rice husk (RH and Rice straw (RS) by optimizing the ash digesting process parameters with the aid of response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of three independent ash digestion process factors like sodium hydroxide concentration (1-3 M), temperature (60-120 °C) and time (1-3 h), for silica production from the mixture of rice husk (RH) and rice straw (RS) were studied. A quadratic model was used to correlate the interaction effects of the independent variables for maximum silica production at the optimum process parameters by employing central composite design (CCD) with RSM.

Using CO as the C1 source for N-formylation of amine is a crucial energy-storage pathway to address the greenhouse effect while generating high-value-added chemicals but is limited by the activation of inert molecules. Herein, a dual active site catalyst with high CO activation and dihydrogen dissociation capacity was fabricated by incorporating a Schiff base and Au nanoparticles (NPs) on silicon dioxide (SiO). The modification of the Schiff base not only provides an alkaline environment for CO absorption but also stabilizes Au NPs in a small and highly dispersed state, which regulates the electronic density of the metal for excellent H cleavage.

With the exponential growth of global photovoltaic (PV) installed capacity, the quantity of discarded PV modules continues to rise. This study innovatively explored the sustainable recovery and utilization of raw materials from discarded solar panels, focusing on the transformation of recycled silicon into microporous silica nanoparticles (MSN). Low toxic organic solvent ethyl acetate (EA) was for the first time utilized to reduce the viscosity of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and facilitated its removal.
