Introduction: Epistaxis is a prevalent clinical condition that can be associated with significant morbidity and places a considerable burden on the healthcare system.
Aim: To ascertain the prevalence of epistaxis in our center and to identify the predictive factors of severity.
Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional analytical study of patients who presented to and/or were admitted for epistaxis at our department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) during the period from January 2015 to December 2022.

Introduction: According to the Portuguese clinical guidelines published in 1999, patients with traumatic brain injury and coagulopathies should remain in-hospital for 24 hours for clinical and image surveillance, despite having an admission computed tomography (CT) scan showing no intracranial lesions. Growing evidence suggests this practice is not only void of clinical relevance, but that it can also be potentially harmful for the patient. Nevertheless, up until now there is no published data concerning the economic impact of this clinical practice.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a novel biocompatible polymeric biomaterial with a wide range of biomedical uses, like tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds, wound dressings, and drug delivery. Although BC lacks good cell adhesion due to limited functionality, its tunable surface chemistry still holds promise. Here, hydroxyapatite (HA) was incorporated into a citrate-modified BC (MBC) using the biomimetic synthesis in simulated body fluid (SBF).

Heparin is an anticoagulant used invariably in all cardiac surgery. Heparin dosing and its reversal were determined by monitoring activated clotting time (ACT). Intermittent heparin dosing after initial bolus dose is widely practiced to maintain ACT level 200-300 seconds in Off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB).
