A rare example of a microporous metal-organic phosphate, [Co(12)(L)(6)(μ(3)-PO(4))(4)(μ(3)-F)(4)(μ-H(2)O)(6)][NO(3)](2) (1), is synthesized by the reaction of a [(η(5)-C(5)H(5))Fe(II)](+)-functionalized terephthalate ligand with Co(NO(3))(2)·6H(2)O and phosphate and fluoride ions generated from the in situ hydrolysis of hexafluorophosphate. 1 is a cubic, 12-connected, face-centered cubic framework sustained by the linear connection of unprecedented, dodecanuclear truncated tetrahedral coordination clusters.

Nowadays, although the exploration of proton conductive materials has ranged from traditional sulfonated polymers to novel crystalline solid materials such as MOFs, COFs, and HOFs, research on crystalline cluster-based organic framework materials is very limited. Here, a pair of homologues Cu(i)-based organic framework containing a Cu12S6 cluster, [Cu12(MES)6(H2O)3]n (1) and {[Cu12(MPS)6(H2O)4]·6H2O}n (2) (H2MES = 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate acid and H2MPS = 2-mercaptoethanesulfonate acid), were hydrothermally synthesized under the same conditions and fully investigated for their proton conduction. Their structures were characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analyses, and PXRD measurements.

Owing to their high surface area, high concentration of active metal sites, and water stability, zirconium(VI)-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have shown excellent activity in the hydrolysis of organophosphorus nerve agents (OPNs). In this regard, for the first time, two topologically different Zr-MOFs (Zr-fcu-tmuc and Zr-bcu-tmuc, constructed from the same organic and inorganic building blocks; fcu=face-centered cubic, bcu=body-centered cubic) have been rationally chosen to investigate the effect of network topology on the catalytic hydrolysis of the nerve agent simulant, dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP). A remarkable enhancement in the hydrolysis rate of DMNP was observed with Zr-bcu-tmuc, reducing the half-life more than three-fold compared with Zr-fcu-tmuc.

We report here the synthesis of robust and porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), M-MTBC (M = Zr or Hf), constructed from the tetrahedral linker methane-tetrakis(p-biphenylcarboxylate) (MTBC) and two types of secondary building units (SBUs): cubic M8(μ2-O)8(μ2-OH)4 and octahedral M6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4. While the M6-SBU is isostructural with the 12-connected octahedral SBUs of UiO-type MOFs, the M8-SBU is composed of eight M(IV) ions in a cubic fashion linked by eight μ2-oxo and four μ2-OH groups. The metalation of Zr-MTBC SBUs with CoCl2, followed by treatment with NaBEt3H, afforded highly active and reusable solid Zr-MTBC-CoH catalysts for the hydrogenation of alkenes, imines, carbonyls, and heterocycles.

Metal-organic frameworks based on previously unknown Zr8/Hf8 cubic clusters.

The ongoing study of zirconium- and hafnium-porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) led to the discovery of isostructural MOFs based on Zr8 and Hf8 clusters, which are unknown in both cluster and MOF chemistry. The Zr8O6 cluster features an idealized Zr8 cube, in which each Zr atom resides on one vertex and each face of the cube is capped by one μ4-oxygen atom. On each edge of the cube, a carboxylate from a porphyrinic ligand bridges two Zr atoms to afford a 3D MOF with a very rare (4,12)-connected ftw topology, in which two types of polyhedral cages with diameters of ∼1.
