High-altitude adaptation is a remarkable example of natural selection, yet the genomic and physiological adaptation mechanisms of Ethiopian highlanders remain poorly understood compared to their Andean and Tibetan counterparts. Ethiopian populations, such as the Amhara and Oromo, exhibit unique adaptive strategies characterized by moderate hemoglobin levels and enhanced arterial oxygen saturation, indicating distinct mechanisms of coping with chronic hypoxia. This review synthesizes current genomic insights into Ethiopian high-altitude adaptation, identifying key candidate genes involved in hypoxia tolerance and examining the influence of genetic diversity and historical admixture on adaptive responses.

Unveiling the role of BON domain-containing proteins in antibiotic resistance.

Front Microbiol

January 2025

Department of Materials, Loughborough University, Loughborough, United Kingdom.

The alarming rise of antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria poses a global health crisis. Their unique outer membrane restricts antibiotic access. While diffusion porins are well-studied, the role of BON domain-containing proteins (BDCPs) in resistance remains unexplored.

Abstract: Recent clinical trials on slowing dementia progression have led to renewed focus on finding safer, more effective treatments. One approach to identify plausible candidates is to assess whether existing medications for other conditions may affect dementia risk. We conducted a systematic review to identify studies adopting a data-driven approach to investigate the association between a wide range of prescribed medications and dementia risk.

Deciphering the Genetic Basis of Sugar Cane ( L) Root System and Related Traits under Nitrogen Stress through the Integration of Genome-Wide Association Studies and RNA-seq.

J Agric Food Chem

January 2025

State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-Bioresources, Guangxi Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Biology, Guangxi University, Nanning 530005, China.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential element for plant growth and development. Identifying functional gene loci associated with nitrogen absorption and utilization in sugar cane can facilitate the development of nutrient-efficient sugar cane varieties. In this study, sugar cane seedlings were subjected to normal and low nitrogen stress treatments within a hydroponic system for the identification of candidate genes related to six root-associated traits using a diversity population of 297 accessions.
