The development of a muscle cell from a precursor cell involves a massive adjustment of gene expression such that over 50 previously silent genes are expressed to produce the muscle proteins required for contractile functions. In differentiated muscle, hormonal and physiologic stimuli modify the expression of these proteins primarily at the level of transcription. How does the cell regulate the switching on and switching off of specific genes to produce the muscle phenotype and respond to new conditions?

Plasma protein levels provide important insights into human disease, yet a comprehensive assessment of plasma proteomics across organs is lacking. Using large-scale multimodal data from the UK Biobank, we integrated plasma proteomics with organ imaging to map their phenotypic and genetic links, analyzing 2,923 proteins and 1,051 imaging traits across multiple organs. We uncovered 5,067 phenotypic protein-imaging associations, identifying both organ-specific and organ-shared proteomic relations, along with their enriched protein-protein interaction networks and biological pathways.

Bladder cancer ranks as the 9th most common type of cancer worldwide. Approximately 70 % of bladder cancers are diagnosed as non-muscle invasive, and they are treated with transurethral resection followed by intravesical therapy. Doxorubicin is one of the effective cytotoxic drugs used in intravesical and systemic therapy, but its cardiotoxicity and nephrotoxicity limit therapeutic dosages.

Background: With a decline of 17β-estradiol (E2) at menopause, E2 has been implicated in the accompanied loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. We aimed at characterizing transcriptomic responses of skeletal muscle to E2 in female mice, testing the hypothesis that genes and pathways related to contraction and maintenance of mass are differentially expressed in ovariectomized mice with and without E2 treatment.

Proteins' flexibility is a feature in communicating changes in cell signaling instigated by binding with secondary messengers, such as calcium ions, associated with the coordination of muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, and gene expression. When binding with the disordered parts of a protein, calcium ions must balance their charge states with the shape of calcium-binding proteins and their versatile pool of partners depending on the circumstances they transmit. Accurately determining the ionic charges of those ions is essential for understanding their role in such processes.
