We evaluated the effect of aging on the functional activity of naturally acquired anti-pneumococcal antibodies, the function of neutrophils in phagocytic killing of opsonized pneumococci, and the complement activity. Opsonic activities of antibodies to all tested pneumococcal serotypes were significantly lower and phagocytic killing of pneumococci by neutrophils was significantly impaired among the elderly, whereas the complement activity was slightly higher in the elderly than in the young adults. The reduced functional activity of serotype-specific antibodies and the compromised function of neutrophils in the opsonophagocytosis of pneumococci are likely to contribute to the increased susceptibility of the elderly to pneumococcal diseases.

Measuring the immunogenicity of pneumococcal vaccines involves the use of immunoassays to measure serotype-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels post-vaccination with the current human reference serum standard (007sp) for anti-pneumococcal capsule antibodies. Development of new pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) with additional serotypes not in 007sp (e.g.

Objectives: There is conflicting evidence as to whether the combined administration of two vaccines can lead to poorer immunogenicity and reactogenicity. The co-administration of the Omicron-adapted COVID-19 vaccine from Novavax (NVX-CoV2601) and a 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20) has not been previously investigated.
Methods: In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, non-inferiority trial, immunocompetent participants aged ≥60 years were randomised in a 1:1:1:1 ratio to four groups: NVX-CoV2601 plus PCV20 (combination group); NVX-CoV2601 plus placebo (NVX-only group); PCV20 plus placebo (PCV20-only group); or placebo plus placebo (placebo group).

We measured anti-pneumococcal serotype 19A vaccine-induced antibodies in 160 children (611 sera) after introduction of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and naturally-induced antibodies in 59 children (185 sera) after colonization and acute otitis media (AOM) episodes caused by strains expressing serotype 19A. Correlate of protection (COP) models were constructed using results from multiple prospectively-collected observations in individual children. Generalized estimating equations followed by logistic-regression was used.

Vaccine-mediated protection and susceptibility to Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) infections are influenced by biological sex. The incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease remains higher in males compared to females even after the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. However, sex-based differences in the immune response to this conjugate vaccine remain unexplored.

Unlabelled: A crucial step in lowering the risk of invasive pneumococcal illness in high-risk populations, such as individuals with plaque psoriasis, is pneumococcal vaccination. The serologic response to the sequential vaccination with Prevenar 13 (PCV13) and Pneumovax 23 (PPSV23) in psoriasis patients under immunosuppressive therapy is still poorly characterized despite national recommendations suggesting vaccination for immunocompromised patients. In this prospective study, we investigated the serological response in 57 patients under active systemic treatment for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who underwent sequential vaccination with PCV13 followed by PPSV23.
