New candidate ground states at 1:4, 1:2, and 1:1 compositions are identified in the well-known Fe-B system via a combination of ab initio high-throughput and evolutionary searches. We show that the proposed oP12-FeB2 stabilizes by a break up of 2D boron layers into 1D chains while oP10-FeB4 stabilizes by a distortion of a 3D boron network. The uniqueness of these configurations gives rise to a set of remarkable properties: oP12-FeB2 is expected to be the first semiconducting metal diboride and oP10-FeB4 is shown to have the potential for phonon-mediated superconductivity with a T(c) of 15-20 K.

Pressurized IrX (X = P and As) stands out as the sole -type superconductors among dozens of filled-skutterudites that are primarily characterized by -type charge carriers. The emergence of superconductivity is proposed to be intimately related to the inharmonic rattling phonons originating from the filled atoms. Here, we explore the impact of the size effect of the rattling atoms by substituting X with Sb, whose radius is 30 and 17% larger than those of P and As, respectively.

Due to the sulfur's atoms' propensity to form molecules and/or polymeric chains of various sizes and configuration, elemental sulfur possesses more allotropes and polymorphs than any other element at ambient conditions. This variability of the starting building blocks is partially responsible for its rich and fascinating phase diagram, with pressure and temperature changing the states of sulfur from insulating molecular rings and chains to semiconducting low- and high-density amorphous configurations to incommensurate superconducting metallic atomic phase. Here, using a fast compression technique, we demonstrate that the rapid pressurisation of liquid sulfur can effectively break the molecular ring structure, forming a glassy polymeric state of pure-chain molecules (Am-S).

Gatemons are superconducting qubits resembling transmons, with a gate-tunable semiconducting weak link as the Josephson element. Here, we report a gatemon device featuring an aluminum microwave circuit on a Ge/SiGe heterostructure embedding a Ge quantum well. Owing to the superconducting proximity effect, the high-mobility two-dimensional hole gas confined in this well provides a gate-tunable superconducting weak link between two Al contacts.

In this paper, we have performed a crystal structure screening and properties prediction framework within the noncentrosymmetric AMX system, which arises from the intercalation of elements in transition metal dichalcogenides. After rigorous evaluations of thermodynamic and dynamic stability, we have refined our initial structure pool of 504 crystals to a focused set of 48 promising candidates. Analysis of their electronic properties has revealed that 23 of these crystals exhibit semiconducting behavior.
