Background: The presence of chicken group-IIA PLA2 (ChPLA2-IIA) in the intestinal secretion suggests that this enzyme plays an important role in systemic bactericidal defence. We have analyzed the bactericidal activity of purified ChPLA2-IIA, on several gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by using the diffusion well and dilution methods.

Results: ChPLA2-IIA displays potent bactericidal activity against gram-positive bacteria but lacks bactericidal activity against gram negative ones. We have also demonstrated a synergic action of ChPLA2-IIA with lysozyme when added to the bacteria culture prior to ChPLA2-IIA. The bactericidal efficiency of ChPLA2-IIA was shown to be dependent upon the presence of calcium ions and then a correlation could be made to its hydrolytic activity of membrane phospholipids. Interestingly ChPLA2-IIA displays a higher dependence to Ca²+ ions than to Mg²+ ions.

Conclusion: We conclude that the main physiological role of ChPLA2-IIA could be the defence of the intestine against bacterial invasions.

National Nanotechnology Laboratory for Agriculture (LNNA), Embrapa Instrumentação, 1452 XV de Novembro St., São Carlos, SP, 13560-970, Brazil.

Multifunctional membranes applied to biomedical materials become attractive to support the biological agents and increase their properties. In this study, biopolymeric fibers based on polycaprolactone (PCL) and pectin (PEC) were reinforced with faujasite zeolite (FAU) for cloxacillin antibiotic (CLX) loading. FAU with a high specific surface area (347 ± 8 m g), high crystallinity and particles with a diameter of up to 100 nm were produced under optimized synthesis conditions (100 °C/4 h).

A novel molecular design based on a quinazolinone scaffold was developed the attachment of aryl alkanesulfonates to the quinazolinone core through a thioacetohydrazide azomethine linker, leading to a new series of quinazolinone-alkanesulfonates 5a-r. The antimicrobial properties of the newly synthesized quinazolinone derivatives 5a-r were investigated to examine their bactericidal and fungicidal activities against bacterial pathogens like , (Gram-positive), , , (Gram-negative), in addition to (unicellular fungal). The tested compounds demonstrated reasonable bactericidal activities compared to standard drugs.

Key Laboratory of Marine Genetics and Breeding, Ministry of Education/ Key Laboratory of Tropical Aquatic Germplasm of Hainan Province, Sanya Oceanographic Institution, Ocean University of China, Qingdao, 266003, Shandong, China. Electronic address:

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small, potent molecules that serve as a crucial first line of defense across a wide range of organisms, including fish. In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial properties of a novel peptide, spanning residues 52 to 80 of the full-length histone H2A protein, comprising a total of 29 amino acids. This peptide, designated as Histone H2A-29 (TroH2A-29), was derived from the golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) and evaluated for its activity against both Gram-positive bacteria, Lactococcus garvieae and Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Gram-negative bacteria, Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio harveyi.

In dental implant surgery, infection is identified as the primary factor contributing to the failure of bone grafts. There is an urgent need to develop bone graft materials possessing antibacterial characteristics to facilitate bone regeneration. Magnesium phosphate bone cement (MPC) is highly desirable for bone regeneration due to its favorable biocompatibility, plasticity, and osteogenic capabilities.

Tuberculosis (TB) is historically the world's deadliest infectious disease. New TB drugs that can avoid pre-existing resistance are desperately needed. The β-lactams are the oldest and most widely used class of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections but, for a variety of reasons, they were largely ignored until recently as a potential treatment option for TB.
