Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the Mississippi Protocol (MP) to treat HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets) syndrome.
Methods: Uniform early initiation of MP (corticosteroids, magnesium sulfate, systolic blood pressure control) was studied prospectively in patients admitted with severe preeclampsia/class 1 or class 2 HELLP syndrome.
Results: One hundred and ninety patients between 2000 and 2007 received MP without suffering maternal death, stroke, or liver rupture. Only 39 of 163 patients (24%) not class 1 when MP began progressed to class 1 disease; only 18.2% of class 1 and 2.4% of class 2 subsequently developed major maternal morbidity.
Conclusion: Early initiation of MP inhibits HELLP syndrome disease progression and severity.

Background: Historically, percutaneous transcatheter left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) has been performed under general anesthesia (GA) with transesophageal echocardiographic images obtained by a noninvasive cardiologist and usually requires an overnight hospital stay. Alternatively, we present our single-center experience performing LAACs under deep sedation (DS), employing an echocardiographic technician instead of a noninvasive cardiologist, and expediting same-day discharge. Mid- to long-term outcomes were also evaluated with follow-up imaging at a 45-day visit.

Introduction: The maternal mortality crisis in the United States disproportionately affects women who are Black, especially those living in the Gulf South. These disparities result from a confluence of healthcare, policy, and social factors that systematically place Black women at greater risk of maternal morbidities and mortality. This study protocol describes the Southern Center for Maternal Health Equity (SCMHE), a research center funded by the National Institutes of Health in 2023 to reduce preventable causes of maternal morbidity and mortality while improving health equity.

Background: The gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) is a marine reef fish commonly found in coastal and shelf waters of the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic Ocean. In this work, a draft reference genome was developed to support population genomic studies of gray snapper needed to assist with conservation and fisheries management efforts.
Methods And Results: Hybrid assembly of PacBio and Illumina sequencing reads yielded a 1,003,098,032 bp reference across 2039 scaffolds with N50 and L50 values of 1,691,591 bp and 163 scaffolds, respectively.
