Analytical and numerical approaches have been made to the problems of (a) propagation through a doubly periodic array of elastic shells in air, (b) scattering by a single elastic shell in air, and (c) scattering by a finite periodic array of elastic shells in air. Using the Rayleigh identity and the Kirchhoff-Love approximations, a relationship is found between the elastic material parameters and the size of the bandgap below the first Bragg frequency, which results from the axisymmetric resonance of the shells in an array. Predictions and laboratory data confirm that use of a suitably "soft" non-vulcanized rubber results in substantial insertion loss peaks related to the resonances of the shells. Inclusion of viscoelasticity is found to improve the correspondence between predictions and data. In addition the possible influences of inhomogeneity due to the manufacturing of the elastic shells (i.e., the effects of gluing sheet edges together) and of departures from circular cylindrical cross-sections are considered by means of numerical methods.

This study aims to investigate the crystallographic properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and strontium-substituted hydroxyapatite (SrHAp) obtained from sand lobster shells (SLS) using various analytical methods. HAp and SrHAp were synthesized by the hydrothermal method using sand lobster () shell waste as a calcium precursor. SLS were calcined at 0 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1000 °C and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Biomolecular condensates are dynamic intracellular entities defined by their sequence- and composition-encoded material properties. During aging, these properties can change dramatically, potentially leading to pathological solidlike states, the mechanisms of which remain poorly understood. Recent experiments reveal that the aging of condensates involves a complex interplay of solvent depletion, strengthening of sticker links, and the formation of rigid structural segments such as beta fibrils.

Coaxial Direct Ink Writing of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomers in 3D Architectures.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, 3231 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19104, USA.

Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) hold great promise for mechanochromic applications in anti-counterfeiting, smart textiles, and soft robotics, thanks to the structural color and elasticity. While CLCEs are printed via direct ink writing (DIW) to fabricate free-standing films, complex 3D structures are not fabricated due to the opposing rheological properties necessary for cholesteric alignment and multilayer stacking. Here, 3D CLCE structures are realized by utilizing coaxial DIW to print a CLC ink within a silicone ink.

Article Synopsis
  • Almond shells (ASs) can be sustainably used to produce cellulose for biocomposites made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for eco-friendly packaging.
  • The production process involved extracting cellulose using subcritical water at high temperatures, followed by purification with either sodium chlorite or hydrogen peroxide, which affected the properties of the resulting biocomposites.
  • Cellulose treated with sodium chlorite showed better dispersion and improved mechanical properties in the composites, enhancing their resistance to moisture and oxygen, making them suitable for food packaging.

This study investigates the rheological behavior of oil well cement pastes (OWCPs) modified with core/shell TiO@SiO (nTS) nanoparticles and polycarboxylate-ether (PCE) superplasticizers at different temperatures (25, 45, and 60 °C). Results show that nTS particles increased static and dynamic yield stresses and the apparent viscosity of the cement slurries due to an increased solid volume fraction and reduced free water availability. The increase in the slurry dispersion by adding PCE superplasticizers enhanced the effect of the nanoparticles on the rheological parameters.
