Article Abstract

Aim: This study investigated the health of gypsy children, aged 0-6 years. We focused on pregnancy, birth, medical care, growth, and vaccinations.

Patients And Methods: This study was conducted between May and December 2004, comparing a gypsy population group (GP) to a sedentary control group with a relatively low socioeconomic level. Both groups were covered by the CMU (French universal health coverage). This study was based on an oral investigation and each child's health records.

Results: The population consisted of 241 children: 120 GP children and 121 CMU children. In the GP children, pregnancy care was lacking, whereas the CMU group received consistent care at regional university hospital centers. For both populations, 85% of births occurred after a mean 38 weeks and 5 days of amenorrhea by ordinary delivery. GP infants were more often transferred to neonatology centers. They were born and were shorter and weighed less than the CMU infants until 6 years of age. They were breast fed more often. They were hospitalized more often, usually for ORL and gastrointestinal infections. Siblings were more numerous. GP child medical care was deemed satisfactory in 40% of cases vs. 70% for CMU children. The vaccinations status was insufficient, particularly in the GP children.

Conclusion: Follow-up of GP should be improved.

Antibodies targeting either the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), such as galcanezumab, fremanezumab, and eptinezumab, or the receptor (erenumab) have been approved for the prevention of episodic and chronic migraine. Although widely used and generally effective, a proportion of patients discontinue treatment due to lack of efficacy. In both randomized controlled trials and observational studies, all anti-CGRP monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have consistently demonstrated comparable efficacy and tolerability, suggesting a pharmacological class effect.

Background: The study of women exposures and child outcomes occurring in the first 1,000 days of life since conception enhances understanding of the relationships between environmental factors, epigenetic changes, and disease development, extending beyond childhood and spanning the entire lifespan. Generation Gemelli is a recently launched case-control study that enrolls mother-newborns pairs in one of the largest university hospitals in Italy, in order to examine the association between maternal environmental exposures and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and the risk of premature birth. The study will also evaluate the association of maternal exposures and the health and growth of infants and children up to 24 months of age.

Unlabelled: High rates of childhood neurodisability are reported among the Roma, Europe's largest ethnic minority community. Interventions targeting early child development (ECD) during the first 2 years of life can improve neurodevelopmental outcomes in vulnerable children; however, evidence from Roma preschoolers is scarce. In a quasi-experimental observational study, we compared neurodevelopmental outcomes at age 2 years, measured on the INTERGROWTH-21st Project Neurodevelopmental Assessment (INTER-NDA), between Roma children receiving a community-based ECD intervention (RI, n = 98), and age- and sex-matched Roma and non-Roma children (RC, n = 99 and NRC, n = 54, respectively) who did not receive the intervention in Eastern Slovakia.

Introduction: Vital dyes lymphography during laparoscopic varicocelectomy (LV) has been suggested to allow for lymphatic mapping thereby allowing for lymphatic sparing (LS) and subsequent reduction of hydrocele formation. Intratesticular injection of the dye seems to achieve the best lymphatic visualization, however, the potential toxicity of some agents, is a cause of concern for the risk of testicular pathological changes. We report our experience with LV, to test the hypothesis that Intraoperative lymphography with methylene blue (BL), is safe and reduces the rate of post-operative hydrocelectomy.

Balloon atrioseptostomy for transposition of the great arteries in Europe: characteristics and outcomes.

Rev Esp Cardiol (Engl Ed)

January 2025

Pediatric Cardiology Department, M3C National reference center, Hospital Necker- Enfants Malades, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, University Paris Cité, Paris, France.

Introduction And Objectives: Balloon atrial septostomy (BAS) improves oxygenation in neonates with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and restrictive foramen ovale. Currently, there is a global shortage of dedicated BAS catheters, while new unmarked catheters have recently become available at some European centers. This study aimed to characterize BAS outcomes using the currently available BAS catheters in Europe.
