Manganese-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) from Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) hepatopancreas has been purified with high purification (781-fold) and recovery (10.8%). The molecular mass of the purified enzyme was estimated to be 26kDa by SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions. In activity staining by native-PAGE, the Japanese flounder Mn-SOD gave three active bands and exhibited KCN-insensitive activity. In addition, the electrophoretic mobility of this enzyme was observed to be faster than that of Japanese flounder Cu,Zn-SOD. On the other hand, the N-terminal amino acid sequence of this Mn-SOD was determined to be 16 amino acid residues, and the sequence showed high homology to other Mn-SODs but not Japanese flounder Cu,Zn-SOD. Analysis of nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences revealed that the Mn-SOD cDNA consisted of a 64bp 5'-non-coding region, a 675bp open reading frame encoding 225 amino acids, and a 465bp 3'-non-coding region. The first 27 amino acids containing a mitochondria-targeting signal were highly conserved among other Mn-SODs.

Aquaculture has grown significantly, contributing to global food security and sustainability; however, intensified fish farming has increased disease susceptibility and antibiotic resistance. This study assessed the probiotic potential of PSCPL13 (hereafter, PSCPL13), isolated from the intestines of Japanese eels, for enhancing the health of olive flounder. After screening 16 isolates, PSCPL13 was selected because of its potential broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many pathogens, such as and .

The physiological response and molecular mechanism of the immune response of Japanese flounder under hypoxia stress remain unclear. In this study, we examined the immune-related physiological indexes and the molecular mechanisms of Japanese flounders under acute hypoxia stress. The results showed that the levels of serum ALT, ALP, AST and LDH in hypoxia stress group were significantly increased (P < 0.

Electronic address:

Due to the discharge of industrial wastewater, urban domestic sewage, and intensive marine aquaculture tailwater, nitrate (NO) pollution has emerged as a significant issue in offshore waters. Nitrate pollution affects aquatic life and may interact with other pollutants, leading to comprehensive toxicity. Cadmium (Cd) is the most widespread metal contaminant, adversely affecting aquatic life in the coastal waters of China.

Japanese flounder is usually gonochoristic, with gonads that are either testes or ovaries. Here, we report an unusual case of hermaphroditism in Japanese flounder captured from the Bohai Sea. In the intersex flounder, the membrane of the upper ovary was closely connected to the abdominal muscles and internal organs, and the eggs filled the entire abdomen.

Rbpms2, an RNA-binding protein with multiple splicing (Rbpms), can interact with RNAs to involve oocyte development, thereby influencing female sex differentiation in vertebrates. Here, two splicing variants of the Rbpms2 gene from Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) were identified, namely Rbpms2.1 and Rbpms2.
