We describe the development, design, fabrication, and testing of an optical wire to assist in the surgical removal of small lesions during breast-conserving surgery. We modify a standard localization wire by adding a 200-μm optical fiber alongside it; the resulting optical wire fit through an 18 gauge needle for insertion in the breast. The optical wire is anchored in the lesion by a radiologist under ultrasonic and mammographic guidance. At surgery, the tip is illuminated with an eye-safe, red, HeNe laser, and the resulting glowball of light in the breast tissue surrounds the lesion. The surgeon readily visualizes the glowball in the operating room. This glowball provides sufficient feedback to the surgeon that it is used (1) to find the lesion and (2) as a guide during resection. Light-guided lumpectomy is a simple enhancement to traditional wire localization that could improve the current standard of care for surgical treatment of small, nonpalpable breast lesions.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate and compare High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR-BT) with Helical Tomotherapy (HT) treatment plans. The focus is on small target volumes near radiation-sensitive organs in the ocular region, to evaluate the advantages of these techniques in treating skin cancer.
Methods: This retrospective observational analysis included patients who underwent skin cancer HDR-BT Freiburg flap treatment between 2019 and 2023.
In percutaneous pelvic trauma surgery, accurate placement of Kirschner wires (K-wires) is crucial to ensure effective fracture fixation and avoid complications due to breaching the cortical bone along an unsuitable trajectory. Surgical navigation via mixed reality (MR) can help achieve precise wire placement in a low-profile form factor. Current approaches in this domain are as yet unsuitable for real-world deployment because they fall short of guaranteeing accurate visual feedback due to uncontrolled bending of the wire.

Effective drug delivery to the posterior segment of the eye remains a challenge owing to the limitations of conventional methods such as intravitreal injections, which are associated with significant side effects. This study explored the use of hollow microneedles (HMNs) for localized intrascleral drug delivery as a minimally invasive alternative. Stainless steel HMNs with bevel angles of 30°, 45°, 60°, and 75° were fabricated using wire electron discharge machining.

Purpose: A triple lumen iteration of the novel photo-angioplasty drug eluting balloon catheter (DEBc) Lumi-Solve may be compromised by guidewire shadow (GWS)-mediated attenuation of balloon surface drug activation. The current study aimed to design and evaluate a novel triple lumen prototype, designated Lumi-Solve-T, to circumvent these issues.
Methods: Effects of guidewire shadowing (GWS) on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation was evaluated using the MTT assay.

This study presents the design and experimental evaluation of advanced corrosion protection coatings for application on prestressing strands which are the core constituents of prestressed concrete structures such as bridges. Variety of self-heal coatings embodying corrective and protective phenomena in response to the degrading effects of corrosion have been designed and tested in simulated aggressive weathering conditions. Standard 7-wire prestressing strands coated with self-heal epoxy, self-heal toughened epoxy and hybrid epoxy coating systems were subjected to salt fog spray up to a duration of 2500 h, and 3M CalCl, 3M NaOH, saturated Ca(OH) solutions and distilled water up to 45 days duration.
