Body composition modifications in patients under low protein diets.

Published: January 2011

Objective: To review the effect of low protein diets on body composition in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Methods: A selected literature review of body composition methods applicable to clinical practice, and a chronological appraisal of relevant studies using low and very low protein diets chosen for their major emphasis on nutritional status and body composition were used for the present study.

Results: Body composition methods were categorized by compartments, techniques, ease of use, clinical applicability, advantages, and disadvantages. One publication of body composition in chronic undernutrition was evaluated because of the absence of kidney disease as a confounder. The remaining studies covered chronic kidney disease stages III-V treated with low and very low protein diets.

Conclusions: Very low protein diets are capable of sustaining mean lean and body cell mass for an extended period in patients with chronic kidney disease stages late III-V. However, intercurrent illness and periods of spontaneous reduction in caloric and protein intake markedly increase the risk for malnutrition. Use of these diets requires regular clinical monitoring by nephrologists and renal dietitians, with particular attention to nutritional surveillance, dietary protein and energy intake, and body composition changes.

Background: Obesity is a multifactorial disease reaching pandemic proportions with increasing healthcare costs, advocating the development of better prevention and treatment strategies. Previous research indicates that the gut microbiome plays an important role in metabolic, hormonal, and neuronal cross-talk underlying eating behavior. We therefore aim to examine the effects of prebiotic and neurocognitive behavioral interventions on food decision-making and to assay the underlying mechanisms in a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT).

Nutritional epidemiology aims to link dietary exposures to chronic disease, but the instruments for evaluating dietary intake are inaccurate. One way to identify unreliable data and the sources of errors is to compare estimated intakes with the total energy expenditure (TEE). In this study, we used the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labeled Water Database to derive a predictive equation for TEE using 6,497 measures of TEE in individuals aged 4 to 96 years.

Background: Although the presence of both obesity and reduced muscle mass presents a dual metabolic burden and additively has a negative effect on a variety of cardiometabolic parameters, data regarding the associations between their combined effects and left ventricular diastolic function are limited. This study investigated the association between the ratio of skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area (SVR) and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) in patients with preserved ejection fraction using random forest machine learning.

Methods: In total, 1,070 participants with preserved left ventricular ejection fractions who underwent comprehensive health examinations, including transthoracic echocardiography and bioimpedance body composition analysis, were enrolled.

Increased cardiovascular risk despite unchanged body composition in NFAI.

Ann Endocrinol (Paris)

University of Health Sciences, Gulhane Faculty of Medicine, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Ankara, Turkey.

Background: Non-functional adrenal incidentaloma (NFAI) is associated with an increased risk of adverse cardiometabolic outcome. Identifying predictors of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) may enable more appropriate management strategies in patients with NFAI. We aimed to investigate the body composition parameters and ASCVD risk in patients with NFAI.

The effectiveness of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) in reduced protein (RP) diets on performance and gut health of broilers under heat stress is largely unknown. A 35-d experiment was conducted using four dietary treatments: a standard protein diet (SP, 22.1 and 20.
