Using automated measurements of kappa (kappa) and lambda (lambda) light chain and IgG, IgA and IgM concentrations we assessed the ability of the kappa/lambda ratio and the heavy/light chain ratio to identify and type monoclonal components which had been previously identified by serum protein electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis. We examined 1151 samples, of which 277 contained monoclonal components; 90% of the monoclonal proteins could be identified by this approach, of which 95% were correctly typed. In addition 19 of 874 samples without monoclonal components showed an abnormal kappa/lambda ratio. We assessed the ability of the immunochemical evaluation to calculate monoclonal component concentration and then compared the results to the scanning densitometry of serum protein electrophoresis.

Introduction: Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a rare and aggressive lymphoma with a poor prognosis. AITL is associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive B cells in most cases, suggesting a possible role for the virus in the pathobiology of AITL. Plasmodium falciparum Reticulocyte Binding Protein Homologue 5 (Pfrh5) is a promising malaria vaccine candidate, given its limited polymorphism, its essential role in parasite survival, a lack of immune selection pressure and higher efficacy against multiple parasites strains. This study evaluated the genetic diversity of Pfrh5 gene among parasites from regions with varying malaria transmission intensities in Mainland Tanzania, to generate baseline data for this potential malaria vaccine candidate.

Preclinical and clinical studies have established that autoreactive immunoglobulin G (IgG) can drive neuropathic pain. We recently demonstrated that sciatic nerve chronic constriction injury (CCI) in male and female mice results in the production of pronociceptive IgG, which accumulates around the lumbar region, including within the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and spinal cord, facilitating the development of neuropathic pain. These data raise the intriguing possibility that neuropathic pain may be alleviated by reducing the accumulation of IgG.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a clinically aggressive subtype of breast cancer that remains an unmet medical need. Because TNBC cells do not express the most common markers of breast cancers, there is an active search for novel molecular targets in triple-negative tumors. Additionally, this subtype of breast cancer presents strong immunogenic characteristics which have been encouraging the development of immunotherapeutic approaches against the disease.

Recent studies suggest that lung adenocarcinoma cells are closely associated with the tumorigenesis of large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma via cellular transformation. However, morphological evidence, along with genetic abnormalities before, during, and after transformation, is quite limited. We present here a case of combined large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and adenocarcinoma exhibiting acinar and solid patterns.
