Pancreatic cancer (PanCa) is a catastrophic disease, being third lethal in both the genders around the globe. The possible reasons are extreme disease invasiveness, highly fibrotic and desmoplastic stroma, dearth of confirmatory diagnostic approaches and resistance to chemotherapeutics. This inimitable tumor microenvironment (TME) or desmoplasia with excessive extracellular matrix accumulation, create an extremely hypovascular, hypoxic and nutrient-deficient zone inside the tumor.

Background And Objectives: Bacterial meningitis is a common serious infectious diseases in children with tough therapy due to resistance to commonly indicated antibacterial therapy. We sought to characterize the bacterial resistance spectrum of Bacterial meningitis in Iraqi pediatric patients.

Methods: Fifty-seven patients' CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) microbiological data were reviewed before enrollment of children (less than 4 years old), Gram-stain identification, white blood cells, protein, and glucose assays, and growing the bacterial pathogen from CSF or blood samples.

Development of crosslinked gelatin films through Maillard reaction and reinforced with poly(vinyl alcohol) for active food packaging.

Int J Biol Macromol

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Advanced Packaging Materials and Technology of Hunan Province, Hunan University of Technology, Zhuzhou 412007, PR China.

In order to improve the functionality of natural gelatin films for active food packaging applications, a combined strategy of crosslinking via Maillard reaction and blending enhancement incorporated with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was explored. In this study, when the mass ratio of gelatin to glucose was 10:1, Maillard reaction of crosslinked gelatin films was the highest, UV absorption and browning index reached the maximum. Infrared analysis showed that PVA could form strong interfacial interactions with gelatin matrix.

Bone Fragility in High Fat Diet-induced Obesity is Partially Independent of Type 2 Diabetes in Mice.

Calcif Tissue Int

September 2024

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Medical Center East, South Tower, 1215 21st Ave. S., Suite 4200, Nashville, TN, 37232, USA.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are risk factors for fragility fractures. It is unknown whether this elevated risk is due to a diet favoring obesity or the diabetes that often occurs with obesity. Therefore, we hypothesized that the fracture resistance of bone is lower in mice fed with a high fat diet (45% kcal; HFD) than in mice that fed on a similar, control diet (10% kcal; LFD), regardless of whether the mice developed overt T2D.

Triple-Responsive, Multimodal, Visual Electronic Skin toward All-in-One Health Management for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

ACS Sens

May 2024

Shandong Provincial Engineering Research Center of Novel Pharmaceutical Excipients, Sustained and Controlled Release Preparations, College of Medicine and Nursing, Dezhou University, Dezhou 253023, China.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common metabolic disorders during pregnancy, leading to serious complications for pregnant women and a threat to life safety of infants. Therefore, it is particularly important to establish a multipurpose monitoring pathway to important physiological indicators of pregnant women. In this work, three kinds of double network hydrogels are prepared with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), borax, and cellulose ethers with varying substituents of methyl (methyl cellulose, MC), hydroxypropyl (hydroxypropyl cellulose, HPC), or both (hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, HPMC), respectively.
