Excessive iron increases the incidence of diabetes and worsens diabetic complications. Reciprocally, diabetes induces iron loading, partially attributable to elevated intestinal iron export according to a recent report. Herein, we show that iron uptake and the mRNA expression of iron importer divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) were significantly increased in the duodenum of streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice.

Divalent metal-ion transporter-1 (DMT1), the principal mechanism by which nonheme iron is taken up at the intestinal brush border, is energized by the H(+)-electrochemical potential gradient. The provenance of the H(+) gradient in vivo is unknown, so we have explored a role for brush-border Na(+)/H(+) exchanger (NHE) isoforms by examining iron homeostasis and intestinal iron handling in mice lacking NHE2 or NHE3. We observed modestly depleted liver iron stores in NHE2-null (NHE2(-/-)) mice stressed on a low-iron diet but no change in hematological or blood iron variables or the expression of genes associated with iron metabolism compared with wild-type mice.

Aim: To describe the variation that divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) shows in patients after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery.
Methods: Prospective and analytical study of DMT1 level at the brush border of proximal jejunum in patients having undergone RYGB surgery. The mucosa of proximal jejunum forming the gastrojejunal anastomosis was biopsied during surgery and after 6 mo later with an endoscopic biopsy.

Sequencing of the human Y chromosome has uncovered the peculiarities of the genomic organization of a heterogametic sex chromosome of old evolutionary age, and has led to many insights into the evolutionary changes that occurred during its long history. We have studied the genomic organization of the medaka fish Y chromosome, which is one of the youngest heterogametic sex chromosomes on which molecular data are available. The Y specific and adjacent regions were sequenced and compared to the X.
