Molecular recognition and detection of small bioactive molecules, like neurotransmitters, remain a challenge for chemists, whereas nature found an elegant solution in form of protein receptors. Here, we introduce a concept of a dynamic artificial receptor that synergically combines molecular recognition with dynamic imine bond formation inside a lipid nanoreactor, inducing a fluorescence response. The designed supramolecular system combines a lipophilic recognition ligand derived from a boronic acid, a fluorescent aldehyde based on push-pull styryl pyridine and a phenol-based catalyst.

Infections caused by gram-negative pathogens continue to be a major risk to human health because of the innate antibiotic resistance endowed by their unique cell membrane architecture. Nature has developed an elegant solution to target gram-negative strains, namely by conjugating toxic antibiotic warheads to a suitable carrier to facilitate the active import of the drug to a specific target organism. Microcin C7 (McC) is a Trojan horse peptide-conjugated antibiotic that specifically targets enterobacteria by exploiting active import through oligopeptide transport systems.

Article Synopsis
  • Vanadium-based oxides show potential as cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries, but their activation typically takes hundreds of cycles to reach optimal performance.
  • The authors propose a new electrical activation strategy that significantly speeds up this activation process, allowing peak capacity to be achieved in just 5 to 25 cycles, even at high current densities.
  • The study highlights how this method improves ion transport and alters the material's structure and behavior, paving the way for more efficient and practical application of vanadium oxide cathodes in zinc-ion batteries.

Article Synopsis
  • Chemoenzymatic dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) combines a metal racemization catalyst and an enzyme to effectively convert racemic compounds into enantiopure products, with compatibility between the two catalysts as a significant challenge.
  • The study introduces a reliable ligand that enhances the coordination between the metal and the ligand, enabling better performance in the DKR process.
  • An efficient DKR method was developed using a copper catalyst and lipase LPL-311-Celite, successfully producing high yields of chiral BINOLs and other functionalized chiral biaryls, with a proposed mechanism involving a radical-anion intermediate facilitating the reaction.

Having a regular medical doctor is associated with better process of care and health outcomes. The goal of this study was to harness the richness in health administrative data to create a measure which accurately predicted whether patients self-identified as having a regular medical doctor. The Canadian Community Health Survey (2007-2012) was linked with health administrative data (HAD) (2002-2012) from Quebec, Canada's second largest province.
