The surveillance of vectors for arthropod-borne pathogens is nowadays an important tool in surveillance programmes throughout Europe. Whereas many studies have been performed to screen arthropods for viruses or bacterial pathogens, only limited information is available concerning the geographical distribution and vector range of pathogenic filariae in Central Europe. To consider the prevalence of filarial parasites in mosquito vectors, we performed a molecular survey of mosquitoes for filarial DNA.

The present study describes the first isolation and identification of a cytochrome oxidase-negative strain of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale. This strain was isolated from 19-week-old turkeys with severe respiratory signs and was identified using biochemical, cytochemical and serological test methods. These findings indicate that cytochrome oxidase-negative Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale strains become probably also an important rule as a causative agent.

The present paper evaluated the effect of the potential beta-adrenoreceptor blocker 2-(3-isopropylamino-2-hydroxypropoxy)-5-(propoxymethyl) acetophenone (FoA33) on the oxidative and phosphorylating processes of the cardiac muscle influenced by small doses of isoprenaline (2 mg.kg-1). Under selected experimental conditions, the consumption of oxygen by the mitochondria of the cardiac muscle in states S3 and S4, rate of production of energy by mitochondria (OPR), coefficient of oxidative phosphorylyzation (ADP:O), respiratory control index (RCI) as well as the effect on the specific activity of the cytochromoxidase marker of mitochondria (COX) were examined.

The study was carried out on a material obtained by a biopsy from 18 children having different types of hemangiomas (capillary, cavernous and combined). Histochemical reactions were applied for the following enzymes: Succenatedehydrogenase (SDH), lactatdehydrogenase (LDH), cytochromoxidase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and paraspecific esterases. Differently reduced activity of the succenatedehydrogenase and the cytochromoxidase in the endothelial cells and the pericytes was established.
