Background: Metallothionein (MT) is known to bind to metals with high affinity. The potential for MT-1 mRNA expression in endometrial stromal cells (ESC) and amniotic cells in response to cytokines and cadmium chloride (CdCl(2)) was evaluated.
Methods: Human ESC were cultured and treated with interleukin-1α, 12-O-tetradecanoylphobol 13-acetate (TPA), forskolin, transforming growth factor-β, and CdCl(2). Amnion-derived (WISH) cells were also cultured and treated with the same reagents. The levels of MT mRNA were evaluated by Northern blot analysis in ESC and WISH cells.
Results: In response to treatment with CdCl(2) (0.01-10 μM), the expression of MT mRNA markedly increased in ESC and WISH cells in a dose-dependent manner. On the other hand, the expression of MT mRNA did not increase after treatment with interleukin-1α (1 nM), TPA (10 nM), forskolin (1 μM) or transforming growth factor-β (1 nM) in these cells.
Conclusion: These findings indicate that MT expression in ESC and WISH cells is sensitive to the CdCl(2) concentration, which is known to be evaluated in cigarette smokers. The present results suggest that increased levels of MT may affect metal metabolism at the feto-maternal interface.

Vascular-like tissues composed of cells maintaining their shape and structure at any position in a culture dish without the use of gels or other artificial materials are ideal vascular models to test the effects of candidate drugs on cells without adsorption by artificial materials and analysis of structural changes over time. In this study, we aimed to prepare fiber-shaped cell aggregates composed of human umbilical vein endothelial and mesenchymal stem cells as vascular pericytes anchored to the bottom of culture dishes at a defined location using our developed cell self-aggregation technique and dumbbell-shaped culture groove. The fiber-shaped cell aggregates maintained their shape for at least two weeks without rupture, and histological analysis revealed that they formed a unique tissue structure with a gapless endothelial layer on the outer surface and capillary-like structures oriented in the same direction as the long axis of the fiber in the medial side.

Shipbreaking is an extremely profitable business; however, it simultaneously destroys the surrounding environment. The discharge of toxic chemicals and materials containing wastes is contaminating surrounding water. However, there is still no sufficient published information particularly focusing on shipbreaking yard (SBY) water quality.

is an important foodborne pathogen causing listeriosis. , existing in the natural environment, can also contaminate food products, which poses a serious threat to human health and life, especially for high-risk groups: pregnant women, newborn babies, and the elderly. Environmental adaptation of refers to the various strategies and mechanisms used by this bacterium to survive and thrive in diverse and often hostile environments that include, among others, toxic heavy metals and disinfectants.

Cadmium pollution is a major environmental issue threatening aquatic ecosystems and the health of aquatic organisms. Our study examines cadmium toxicity at different levels, highlighting pyroptotic cell death in the freshwater fish Channa punctatus (spotted snakehead). For this purpose, 90 well-acclimatized fish were categorized into three groups: one control and two treatment groups, i.
