Introduction: Availability of competitive foods in schools has been linked to unhealthful dietary behaviors of students. Little is known about the food environment of alternative high schools, schools that enroll students at risk of academic failure. We examined correlations between food opportunities during the school day and selected dietary behaviors of students attending alternative high schools.

Methods: Baseline data were collected in fall 2006 as part of the Team COOL (Controlling Overweight and Obesity for Life) pilot study, a group randomized obesity prevention trial. Students (n = 145) attending 6 alternative high schools in Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota, completed a survey on food opportunities during the school day and selected dietary behaviors. We used mixed-model multivariate cross-sectional analysis and adjusted for demographic characteristics to examine associations of interest.

Results: Food opportunities during the school day were positively associated with overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, high-fat foods, and fast-food restaurant use.

Conclusion: Having many food opportunities during the school day at alternative high schools was linked to the consumption of foods and beverages high in sugar and fat and low in nutrients. School-based interventions should focus on changing the food environment in alternative high schools to decrease less healthful eating opportunities and to increase the availability of healthful foods and beverages.

Converting Fe-N-C single-atom catalyst to a new FeNxSey cluster catalyst for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Tianjin University, School of Materials science and engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tianjin University, 300072, Tianjin, CHINA.

Fe-N-C catalyst is the most promising alternative to platinum catalyst for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), however its high performance cannot be maintained for a long enough time in device. The construction of a new Fe coordination environment that is different from the square-planar Fe-N 4 configuration in Fe-N-C catalyst is expected to break current stability limits, which however remains unexplored. Here, we report the conversion of Fe-N-C to a new FeNxSey catalyst, where the Fe sites are three-dimensionally (3D) co-coordinated by N and Se atoms.

Partial oxidation of methane (POM) is achieved by forming air-methane microbubbles in saltwater to which an alternating electric field is applied using a copper oxide foam electrode. The solubility of methane is increased by putting it in contact with water containing dissolved KCl or NaCl (3%). Being fully dispersed as microbubbles (20-40 µm in diameter), methane reacts more fully with hydroxyl radicals (OH·) at the gas-water interface.

Background: Low load resistance training with blood flow restriction (LL-BFRT) has been shown to improve muscle strength and hypertrophic function. The effect of LL-BFRT on lower extremity muscle improvement has been widely discussed. However, no studies have discussed the effect of this training method on the upper extremity muscles until now.

Evaluation of the diagnostic efficiency of fluorescence hybridization for pulmonary tuberculosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Front Med (Lausanne)

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Center for Reproductive Medicine, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Major Obstetric Diseases, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Higher Education Joint Laboratory of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Objective: In clinical practice, an accurate and efficient detection approach for pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is highly needed. The fluorescence hybridization (FISH) assay for PTB might be a suitable alternative to current tests. However, a systematic assessment of the diagnostic performance of this new approach is not available.

Model compression for real-time object detection using rigorous gradation pruning.

iScience

Achieving lightweight real-time object detection necessitates balancing model compression with detection accuracy, a difficulty exacerbated by low redundancy and uneven contributions from convolutional layers. As an alternative to traditional methods, we propose Rigorous Gradation Pruning (RGP), which uses a desensitized first-order Taylor approximation to assess filter importance, enabling precise pruning of redundant kernels. This approach includes the iterative reassessment of layer significance to protect essential layers, ensuring effective detection performance.
