Background: The subject of pain and pain therapy is not mandatory in medical curricula in Germany. Therefore, the German Society for the Study of Pain (DGSS) has developed a core-curriculum for pain and suggested its implementation for all medical faculties.
Method: At the University of Witten/Herdecke this DGSS core curriculum was extended in terms of a "pain week", which comprised 22 h of seminars and clinical teaching and started in 2009. The knowledge gained by the students regarding the intended learning issues was measured by a pre-post self-assessment questionnaire.
Results: In almost every category the students reported significant knowledge gain. The learning issues were rated as relevant for the professional career.
Conclusion: The "pain week" is intended to be a constant part of the medical curriculum at the University of Witten/Herdecke in the future. It will be integrated into the new cross-sectional subject of palliative care and be assessed by examinations.

Epilepsy is a neurological disease characterized by unprovoked recurrent epileptic seizures. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the commonest type of focal epilepsy in adults that resist to the conventional anti-seizure medications (ASMs). Interestingly, ASMs do not affect the epileptogenesis and progression of disease.

Purpose: Polypharmacy is a widespread phenomenon in older patients. In particular, the anticholinergic burden of medication is an important risk factor for delirium due to age-related changes in the cholinergic system.
Methods: Preoperative medication, including the calculation of the anticholinergic burden (ACB), was recorded in a prospective study (421 patients) to identify potential risks associated with medication intake.

The right heart catheterization (RHC) remains an important diagnostic tool for a spectrum of cardiovascular disease processes including pulmonary hypertension (PH), shock, valvular heart disease, and unexplained dyspnea. While it gained widespread utilization after its introduction, the role of the RHC has evolved to provide valuable information for the management of advanced therapies in heart failure (HF) and cardiogenic shock (CS) to name a few. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview on the indications, utilization, complications, interpretation, and calculations associated with RHC.

Background: Esophageal cancer (EC) is a disease with a poor prognosis. While treatment options have been improved, there is no consensus for surveillance strategies following therapy with curative intent. As the incidence of EC is rising and a large fraction of patients will experience disease recurrence, the need for evidence-based treatment and optimal surveillance is evident.

Endurance exercise training (ET) is an effective treatment in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), but the efficacy of resistance training in this patient population has been only scarcely evaluated. In this multicenter, randomized trial, we evaluated the effects of combined endurance and resistance training over 12 months in patients with HFpEF. The primary endpoint was a modified Packer score, including all-cause mortality, hospitalizations classified as potentially related to heart failure or exercise and changes in peak oxygen consumption ( ), diastolic function (E/e'), New York Heart Association (NYHA) class and global self-assessment (GSA).
