Measuring the visual environment of children and young people at risk of myopia: a scoping review.

Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol

January 2025

Radiation, Chemicals, Climate and Environmental Hazards Directorate, UK Health Security Agency, Didcot, UK.

Purpose: Myopia (short-sightedness) is an emerging WHO priority eye disease. Rise in prevalence and severity are driven by changes in lifestyle and environment of children and young people (CYP), including less time spent in bright daylight and more time spent on near-vision activities. We aimed to systematically map the literature describing direct, objective measurements of the visual environment of CYP.

Hyperosmotic stress-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation via the mechanosensitive PIEZO1 channel in dry eye corneal epithelium.

Unlabelled: The activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome by hyperosmotic stress is a critical pathophysiological response in dry eye disease (DED), driving the chronic cycle of inflammation on the ocular surface. The specific mechanism underlying hyperosmotic mechanical stimulation activates the NLRP3 inflammasome remains unclear. This study provides evidence that PIEZO1, a mechanosensitive ion channel, functions as the primary receptor for corneal epithelial cells in sensing mechanical stimulation induced by tear hyperosmolarity.

Aims/purpose: This study aims to assess whether changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) occur after a blood draw and quantify these changes' magnitude in a group of patients over 60 years old.

Methods: We analysed data from the right eye of 54 subjects, with a mean ( SD) age of 68 4 years. The measurements were conducted in the morning while fasting.

Purpose: There is evidence of the role of dark adaptation (DA) as a functional biomarker in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) where foveal cones are impacted during the initial stages of AMD. In this study we determine the repeatability of smartphone application (MOBILE DA) to evaluate the cone-mediated dark adaptation (DA) in healthy young adults.

Methods: Testing was done by placing a smartphone in front of the subject in a dark room.
